Dos2 source skills

Dos2 source skills DEFAULT

Source Skills (not to be confused with Sourcery Skills) in Divinity Original Sin 2 are a new type of skill that require Source Points to use. These skills are very powerful and have limited uses due to the scarcity of Source Points. Use these skills wisely to absolutely devastate your foes.

The first place to acquire source points is in the hidden cave/vault with the soul-jars; afterwards it can be obtained by stepping in green glossy puddles of Source or consuming spirits. To obtain source you must have already removed your collar. Using the skill will use up the source power.

How to acquire source point:

  1. In Divinity Original Sin 2, there are some areas covered with source water, let your characters stand on them and you will gain source points. For example, in first chapter, there is a pool of source water in The Hollow Marshes and another in Necromancer's Tower.
  2. Some skills can also grant you source points, such as Source Vampirism.
  3. Absorb souls from soul jars, you can find those soul jars in quest Withermoore's Soul Jar and The Cursed Ring
  4. Source fountains are renewable means of replenishing source points. They can be found in the Decrepit Ruins in Act I, under Meistr Siva's house in Act II, and in Arhu's prison in Act IV.

To increase the number of Source points you can hold (up to a maximum of three) players must seek out powerful Sourcerers for their aid as part of the Powerful Awakening quest.

So we have the game, we have our hands on the source skills, and ultimately now is the time where we can put our two cents in and decide if Source was ultimately a good idea for the game.

The original concept behind source skills were that they were a way to allow players to use later flashier spells earlier on, albeit at a cost, as well as use them to turn the tide.

---

My personal opinion is ditch them! Ditch them hard!

Ignoring that most Source skills are dreadful (Just get into the skill crafting source skills and prepare to be disapointed) the issue is that exactly that didn't occur.

By the time you have access to source skills, you have access to the majority of the skills in the game, so their original purpose is out.

They also have the distinct honor of effectively halfing the amount of usable skills in the game. While non-source skills you will often find ways to get more use out of them, because source relies on a very finite resource you will usually stick with your best one.

Overall I think what we do get from them (A powerful skill that is tactically sound, connected to a resource so they cannot be spammed) is outweighed by the overall cost to the game. I do think the game would have been improved without them.

If Source MUST return in the sense that they cannot "remove" features no matter how detrimental. Then how about using the same idea many had before with making source skills usable normally but can additionally be charged with source for greater effect? Many of the source skills as they are right now are just "enhanced" versions of other skills.

But that is just my opinion.

The mechanic behind it (Having to go get more source to cast it) is just a time wasting mechanic and should be removed entirely imo.

Currently, the requirement on having to go get some source to cast these "supposed" to be powerful spells means I just don't cast them. First off most of them aren't that powerful and the AP cost would've been enough of a burden for casting them. Second, I don't want to have to go wasting my time looking for more source after each fight. It's not hard. you can easily just WP to a Source Fountain, but it does waste your time which I don't find to be an enjoyable mechanic at all.

It's the same reason I remove weight restrictions from Skyrim, having to run from point A to point B just to off load some gear because of a silly restriction on weight does not make for a challenging or fun gameplay mechanic.

(Weight restriction isn't realistic btw, fun fact, Wagons existed in the old days pulled by Oxen and horses which people would use to move heavy equipment, but most games don't implement them because of the amount of time that would take)

Because of the limited resource, I almost never use it either.
I really don't like this design and getting source back feels like a chore !

I would have prefered if it had a long cooldown like 50 turns (or like a 60 minutes ingame time).
You still would use those skills scarcely and wisely.

Most of the source skills especially from the summoning trees are so bad you wonder why do they even cost source. Summoning fire slug is as good as a incarnate. Who the hell ever uses gate of planes? Inner demon from lohse is just a slightly better version of frost armor on a 2ap 1 source point skill. Skin graft is so overnerfed theres practically no point in ever using it.

Isn´t skin graft even better that it was, as it doesn´t strip your armors now? It just costs source, because it is, unlike most others, actually extremely useful spell

i really think they would be better of with not imposing source cost on ordinary powerfull skills and just make around 7-8 source skills that are really powerfull and can get you out of pinch as sort of magic button. For example heal all allies for lets say 1200 Hp. and costing 2-3 source points

What? it cost 2 sources and 2AP that is ridiculous, before the purpose of skingraft is to get 2x adrenaline + flesh sacrifice (which was broken since it cost no action points and no source). But due to this heavy nerf, skin graft is situational at very best, because late game you have enough spells/damage why do you need to refresh cooldown on a 2ap? heck just auto attack would be much more efficient.

I'd much prefer just all the more powerful spells require higher amounts of investment into their skill tree. (Like requiring 5-6 Pyro etc)

Currently, even with the source costs, these spells are barely even worth the AP it costs to cast them. Most are worse than spells that cost less AP that you get earlier.

I really don't understand the purpose behind spells costing source. If you wanted them to only be used once per combat, would of been as simple as giving them long cooldowns. With AP cost being tied to how powerful they are.

Straight up bad design imo

You have so little you don't want to use them. Even if you do use them you end up wishing you didn't because suddenly you need it for a quest or whatever and you hate yourself for using it. Then you have to go around looking for more source etc.

It's so frustrating overall I simply decided to not use it at all.

Honestly those skills were so powerful in DOS 1 that they were game breaking. The way they are implemented currently in DoS 2 is similar to per rest skills from other games, which forces them to be used strategically, not just tactically. I consider this a good thing, otherwise they couldn't even put these powerful skills in the game if they didn't want them to marginalize all previous skills like they did in DoS 1. I can understand the viewpoint of it being a bit of a hassle though if you're the kind of person who would seriously go back to town after every single battle in order to use the skills every single battle...

For me, if they should return, they should be unique, like actual source skills that make you badass. Like Source Blast that was being used by some level 8 bitch on the ship, like you telling me she got this but we don't throughout like...the whole game really.

The fact that source skills are part of the geo/pyro and those skills seems....interesting, but like, if they want to do that, it should be NEW skills that should have been source skills, not the old skills that we just used without source. Like really, a summon fireslug? The rangers Arrow spray?Or hell, even the other one (Cant remember name), like all it does is increase range by 3m lol. Like what? They should have made new skills and they should be reallllyyy powerful.

I'm playing with a friend, and even if we're losing a bit, convo usually goes like "um, should i use ____(source skill)?"
"nah, just use something else".

I mean, i can do so much more with just other basic abilities over source, which shows a core problem. If source skills do return, they should be from a completely new tree, with maybe as many skills as regular trees but you can only have a limited amount, so you still get to make choices and try to compliment your playstyle. And those skills should actually be really powerful, i mean you are fking sourceres, you are bound to have some powerful skills.

Yea in Baldur's Gate this was solved by having you have to rest to restore spells and having a % chance of enemy encounters during the night.

Even that system had it's flaws but I feel it's a better system then just forcing players to waste time using fast travel to and from source fountains if they want to use Source abilities regularly.

If you used Baldur's Gate's system combined with a system in place where certain quests had timers tied to how many days it takes you could add urgency to only resting when absolutely necessary, just like in most DND campaigns.

Though I still think high AP costs tied with long cooldowns and high combat ability score requirements could make abilties powerful, but not constantly spammed. Source as a resource just seems entirely pointless.

Divinity: Original Sin 2: 10 Best Source Skills, Ranked

In Divinity: Original Sin 2, the basic skills are not enough. Because what separates you from most other NPCs in the game apart from the fact that the game's tailor-made for your character, is that you're a Sourcerer. That's a designation for an elevated magic user in the game's lore. Sourcerers can use Source, which is basically like mana laced with high-fantasy performance-enhancers, which the Gods gulp down like soda.

RELATED: The Best Weapons In Divinity: Original Sin II, Ranked

Needless to say, Source-related abilities are significantly more powerful. Each of them can turn the tide of battle if used correctly. It's just that some of these Source skills are easier to use correctly or have bigger implications than others. Since Source Points that are used for casting these Source abilities are rare, you'd want to reserve that currency for the most powerful Source skills. With that in mind we take a look at the very best and most powerful Source abilities and rank them.

10 Thick Of The Fight

  • Action Point cost: 2
  • Source Point cost: 1
  • Cooldown: 4
  • Use: For buffing up the caster, preferably a melee one

The melee warrior playstyle is a popular one in the game. They're powerful as it is, especially if you just let them focus on the Warfare discipline, but with Thick of the Fight, they can turn a losing battle into a close victory.

Thick of the Fight is a huge damage boost. It will buff the attack of the caster by a certain amount per nearby character. That's regardless of whether they're friend or foe. It does work with any character but is best maximized on a melee damage dealer, particularly one with high physical armor.

9 Dust Blast

  • Action Point cost: 3
  • Source Point cost: 1
  • Cooldown: 3
  • Use: For Earth damage and multiple Blinding status

Dust Blast doesn't exactly sound intimidating or sophisticated and it isn't. The skill involves the caster throwing pocket sand at multiple enemies. That's it. Except you can imagine that sand to be sharp and granular and also to penetrate armor, since this skill deals a threatening amount of Earth damage.

RELATED: Divinity: Original Sin II: The Best Armor Pieces, Ranked

As with all sandy attacks, it also blinds enemies. The radius is quite wide as well and the attack range is long enough to make the caster look like a punky menace out to prank seasoned magicians and soldiers. The tactical functions are therefore wide.

8 Vacuum Aura

  • Action Point cost: 2
  • Source Point cost: 1
  • Cooldown: 5
  • Use: For Air damage and disabling enemy spellcasting

One of the reasons combat in Divinity: Original Sin 2 can be nerve-wracking when it's the enemy's turn is how the skills are almost always accurate. That's why denying the opposing team the ability to cast them is always a welcome move.

Vacuum Aura does that with flying colors. It deals Air damage, suffocates enemies for continuous magic armor damage, and also silences them. Against magic-user characters with staves or wands, this can be devastating.

7 Chain Lightning

  • Action Point cost: 3
  • Source Point cost: 1
  • Cooldown: 5
  • Use: For direct Air damage against multiple targets

Most Chain Lightning spells in other fantasy games introduce a crack of electricity whose damage diminishes with each jump to a target. This Chain Lightning is different; the damage doesn't get reduced, making it quite an insane defiance of the typical spell.

RELATED: Baldur's Gate 3: Similarities It Has To Divinity: Original Sin 2 (& Differences)

It deals around 150 percent Air damage to all eight targets within an 8-meter radius. That's often enough to fully wipe a scarred or battered enemy team, especially if they're standing on puddles or are wet from Hydrosophist spells.

6 Dome of Protection

  • Action Point cost: 1
  • Source Point cost: 1
  • Cooldown: 6
  • Use: For defensive buffing and armor restoration

All the pre-made characters in Divinity: Original Sin 2 are overpowered in their own way. That's probably why custom characters are automatically granted the Dome of Protection skill; to balance them out. It's a highly beneficial skill that can save a whole party from getting wiped.

Dome of Protection is a mass heal for armor, whether physical or magic. On top of that, it also increases the resistance of the targets around the caster. Anyone who's played the game will know that physical and magic armor is difficult to whittle down, making this cheap Source skill top-notch.

5 Pyroclastic Eruption

  • Action Point cost: 3
  • Source Point cost: 3
  • Cooldown: 5
  • Use: For direct Earth damage and setting the battlefield on fire

If you want to make the whole battle a miserable experience for everyone involved (but mostly the enemies), then Pyroclastic Eruption is the right tool for that. After casting it, the whole combat experience will be about as pleasant as swimming in a pool of tar.

RELATED: Divinity: Original Sin: Best Boss Fights In The Franchise

Pyroclastic Eruption covers a generously large area of the combat zone with oil. Anyone that passes on those oil surfaces will be slowed down to a crawl. They'll also get higher damage if the oil is set on fire. That on top of the worryingly high Earth damage makes it an intimidating Source skill.

4 Grasp of the Starved

  • Action Point cost: 2
  • Source Point cost: 2
  • Cooldown: 5
  • Use: For mass physical damage and Crippled status

Speaking of turning the combat area into a death trap, Grasp of the Starved is also up there with the likes of Pyroclastic Eruption. It's a perfect ability for battles that have gone on for a while and where there are visible puddles of blood on the ground.

Because Grasp of the Starved damages anyone standing on a surface of blood. The damage is high and the targets also become Crippled, meaning they won't be able to move for a couple of turns. That makes them more susceptible to cluster damage.

3 Summon Inner Demon

  • Action Point cost: 1
  • Source Point cost: 1
  • Cooldown: 6
  • Use: For additional attacks and crowd control

Controlling the battlefield has never been easier with the Summon Inner Demon skill. This one gives your caster a cool demon avatar above them that will pummel any enemy that tries to come close. To that end, it grants some free attacks, which is always handy in a turn-based game.

RELATED: Ways To Level Up Fast In Divinity Original Sin 2

Additionally, the skill's demon avatar scares away anyone without magic armor and also whittles away that magic armor. So if they come close, they get mauled until they run away compulsively. Put this skill on a melee character or battlemage and watch enemies scamble.

2 Skin Graft

  • Action Point cost: 1
  • Source Point cost: 1
  • Cooldown: N/A
  • Use: For resetting cooldowns and removing negative status effects

The reason why the Polymorph school in Divinity: Original Sin 2 is complicated is due to abilities like this one. Skin Graft is more like a support skill that enables many broken tactics involving certain skill chains and sequences.

The cost is cheap and the effect removes Burning, Necrofire, Poisoned, and Bleeding statuses. The main draw, however, is the skill resetting all of the cooldowns. So you can imagine just how many overpowered combos you can pull off with this clever ability.

1 Apotheosis

  • Action Point cost: 2
  • Source Point cost: 3
  • Cooldown: N/A
  • Use: For making Source skills a lot more affordable to cast

Are you a big fan of even more broken combos in Divinity: Original Sin 2? Then always make sure to grab yourself an Apotheosis skill. It's a Source skill made for all other Source skills as Apotheosis makes those practically free as long as their cost is three Source Points or below.

It just so happens that the best and most powerful Source skills fall within that cost. The usual combo with this one involves Haste and skills like Skin Graft in order to ensure that you can cast Source abilities for days without rest.

What's the point of Source skills?
I love this game to death. It's great. But, I'm nearly thhrough Act 1 and so far I've never used the source skills on any of my characters becuase they requires Source which is pretty much impossible to get. And even if you do find a soruce pool and get a point for 1 (and only one) character, you save it for bless, not to throw away on regular source skills.

I guess I don't understand why they'd put skills in the game that they heavily discourage you from using. And it's not like the source skills appear to be anything great. The initial ones at least actually appear kind of crappy. What's the point of even having them in the game if you can't use them at least fairly regularly?

Hydrosophist - Divinity Original Sin 2 Skill Showcase

Divinity Original Sin 2: All Skill Schools Ranked

Players of Larian Studios' Divinity: Original Sinwill likely praise the game not just for its solid narrative, but dynamic combat offerings. After all, while the game series has its own turn-based combat system, both Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin 2allows players to use their characters' abilities inside and outside of combat.

RELATED: 10 Divinity II: Original Sin Mods That Make The Game Even Better

Moreover, these abilities - called Skills - range from all things offensive, defensive, and even support abilities. As such, it's very likely for all players to find Skills that fit their taste in the games. Additionally, Divinity: Original Sin 2 offers 12 Skill Schools! In fact, each of these Schools has a diverse set of Skills players can mix and match with their characters. However, which Skill Schools are the best?

13 Special Skills

Of all Skill Schools in Original Sin 2, it's the Special Skills that cannot be learned via Skill Books. Instead, players can only use these Skills when they play a certain Origin, create a character of a certain race, or by equipping certain items.

For instance, only the Origin character Ifan Ben-Mezd can use Summon Ifan's Soul Wolf. Moreover, only a custom character has Dome of Protection. However, if a player makes a Custom Human, both the latter and Ifan will be sharing Encourage, a Human-exclusive Skill.

Thankfully, weapon-based Special Skills can be easily acquired and used. Staff of Magus (Staff), All In (2H), and Flurry (Dual Wield) grant additional offensive options to their wielders, while Shields Up (Shield) can buff tanks nicely.

12 Sourcery Skills

Sourcery Skills, separate from Source Skills, reflect the player's interactions with the Divine. Thanks to certain points in the game, players slowly acquire these Skills that can help players out in a pinch. Ideally, thanks to their low AP cost, Sourcery Skills can be best used as minor buffs or debuffs throughout the game.

Unfortunately, only five of them exist in Original Sin 2. As such, players may as well rely on other restorative Skills and keep Sourcery Skills at a minimum or in dire situations.

11 Source Skills

Unlike Sourcery Skills, Source Skills are new Skills introduced in Original Sin 2. These Skills, which require rare Source Points, can devastate entire battlefields. Unfortunately, due to the rarity of Source Points in the game, they do have extremely limited uses. And while there are Source fountains that can "renew" Source, they can only be found in certain parts of the story.

However, this isn't to say that Source Skills are "weak." Rather, due to their rarity, they are best used when in extremely crucial situations or, at worst, facing bosses.

10 Summoning Skills

Given the choice, who wouldn't want minions to kill the enemy for them? Thanks to Summoning Skills, players can summon terrifying beasts and totems help them win battles. However, in terms of sheer practicality, only a few Summon Skills seem to stand out as great utility options.

RELATED: 10 Of The Best Modern-Day CRPGs, Ranked

For instance, Conjure Incarnate and Elemental Totem seem to be more accessible Summoning Skills for most builds. However, it seems only more Summoning-focused players should use most other Summoning Skills in the game, as they lean towards buffing summoned creatures.

9 Polymorph Skills

Again, this isn't to say the Polymorph School is useless. Rather, the Polymorph School serves as proof that despite the sheer versatility a Skill School offers, they sometimes end up being extremely circumstantial.

For instance, Chicken Claw turns target characters into chickens - which is in itself a great skill to have, especially when thwarting bosses. Moreover, Heart of Steel grants Physical Armor, and Chameleon Cloak gives Invisibility. The aforementioned skills can greatly help almost any party member.

However, more bizarre Skills such as Spider Legs, Medusa Head, Equalise, and Spread Your Wings become more reliant on the battle situation.

8 Aerothurge Skills

Aerothurge Skills focus on buffing allies and debuffing enemies, often through inflicting status effects and even teleportation. As such, Aerothurge Skills can serve as great buffs to get allies going or save enough time to prepare battle tactics by delaying enemy movement.

Extremely useful Aerothurge Skills include teleportation spells such as Teleportation and Nether Swap, or even mobility-oriented Skills such as Evasive Aura, Uncanny Evasion, and Favourable Wind.

They aren't all buff and debuff Skills, though. Some Aerothurge Skills deal great AOE attacks such as Superconductor, Closed Circuit, and Thunderstorm.

7 Necromancy Skills

Who doesn't want a good life steal, right? Almost anyone who played Original Sin 2 will likely know how valuable having even just a single Necromancy Skill could be in the game.

However, where Necromancy shines is its ability to cause bloody and debilitating effects to targets, especially those that deal damage over time. It's perhaps these effects that make Necromancy Skills especially deadly. After all, enough Necromancy Skills can easily pick off opponents.

Unfortunately, other Skills do seem flashier and more fast-acting compared to the style Necromancy offers.

6 Geomancer Skills

Unlike other element-based Skill Schools, Geomancers specialize in dealing Earth and Poison damage. As such, much of their abilities cause the Poison and Acid status or even convert surfaces into oil and other corrosive substances. Moreover, the nature of Geomancer makes it a good fit for the Pyrokinetic Skill School, which gets buffed by oil.

Unfortunately, unless players want to focus on dealing damage over time with Poison or burning everything with Pyrokinetic Skills, Geomancer isn't always the ideal Skill School - especially for players who want to use a one Skill School build.

5 Scoundrel Skills

As one of the non-elemental Skill Schools, Scoundrel Skills remain extremely significant to melee fighters. However, the specialist nature of Scoundrel Skills and their reliance on daggers make them perfect for Rogues and Shadowblades. Moreover, these Skills focus on granting debuffs to opponents while specializing in stealth, taking advantage of both critical damage and backstab potential.

However, despite the efficiency of Scoundrel Skills in eliminating foes, it's not a great standalone Skill School. Scoundrel-reliant characters will often need backup and support, as Scoundrel Skills don't have enough utility abilities.

4 Huntsman Skills

Similar to Scoundrel Skills, Huntsman Skills are one of the few non-elemental Skill Schools in the game. Moreover, unlike the dagger-reliant Scoundrel Skills, these Skills rely on ranged weapons. Interestingly, unlike having different arrows, Huntsman Skills also have a healthy dose of detection and escape Skills fit for Rangers.

RELATED: The 10 Hardest Bosses & Enemies In Divinity: Original Sin 2 (& How To Beat Them)

Thankfully, the Huntsman Skill School also serves as one of the more reliable Skill Schools in the game. For instance, First Aid as an early Huntsman Skill can be invaluable, as the health it regenerates can be enough for soloists to make a tactical retreat or finish foes off.

3 Hydrosophist Skills

One might wonder what a support-focused Skill School like Hydrosophist does this close to the top spot. The Hydrosophist is one of the few Skill Schools with almost enough ratio of recovery or buff spells and damaging Skills. As such, a Hydrosophist specialist can easily transition from a support role into a combat role if needed.

Moreover, the Hydrosophist's healthy balance of combat and support spells make it extremely sustainable in battle. Moreover,  it's a great asset to support characters who want to stand on their own.

2 Pyrokinetic Skills

The Pyrokinetic Skill School is one of the earliest Skill Schools introduced in the game. However, it's also one of the most reliable Skill Schools players can use. Aside from its damage-buffing Skills, it has a healthy arsenal of Fire-based Skills that can easily burn enemies to a crisp.

Unlike other Skill Schools in the game, Pyrokinetic Skills have immense offensive potential. After all, most objects in the game can be blasted to smithereens, and a Pyrokinetic Skill can just let a burning battlefield finish enemies for the players.

1 Warfare Skills

Nothing beats the basics. Unlike other Skill Schools in the game, Warfare is perhaps one of the most flexible. These focus on melee offense and defense, providing both a means of protection and bashing opponents with weapons. Warfare also utilizes most melee weapons in the game, and often have weapon requirements.

Thankfully, almost all classes will find themselves capable of using one form of weapon, which may benefit from Warfare Skills. Moreover, many Warfare Skills deal AOE damage, which is perfect to thwart off multiple enemies at once.
