Verified Purchase

I am surprised at Asus products, during the past few months I have bought several products from Asus. But I want to make it clear that I do no marry to any brand, my loyalty is to my pocket and my needs.

I have done my research for several products that I need it to replace, a Chromebook, a tablet and now a phone. I ended buying those three devices from Asus.

I never I considered a specific brand name; I was looking for the best value with the best specs that will fall within my budget and / or intended needs /use.

Based on my new experience Asus is a good brand, as good as Dell, Samsung, LG, Nexus, Etc.

My review is based on what I get for my money, not for the brand that is on the device
I bought the Asus Zenfone 2, 16GB/2GB for my dad, but after using it and checking the phone for the review; I have to say that I wouldn’t mind to buy this phone for my personal use. Though may be the 64GB/4GB will a better for me (my personal phone now is a One plus One, it is a phone that is already a year old 64GB/3GB but I am very happy with it, it is fast and reliable)

I compared both phones specs, based on the information available in www.gsmarena.com before I bought the Zenfone, I was impressed twith it, most of the specs where very similar to the Oneplus One.

The following is not a comparison to find which it’s a better phone, but to compare the best value for my money. Some people may say it’s an unfair comparison between an older phone vs. a newer one; well my answer is that these two phones are what I have on my hands now, and I do not care about the milliseconds between processors (I am not a testing lab), both phones are very good for my everyday use, and they do compare.

Batteries Zenfone 3100mah vs. Oneplus One 3000mah
LTE bands Zenfone 1, 2,3,4,5,7,8,17,20 vs. Oneplus One 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 17, 38, 40 (both phones USA LTE editions)
Screen in both phones are comparable in dimensions and resolution, but the actual viewable area on the screen of the Zenfone is bit larger in height (about 10mm) and in width (about 2mm), because it does not have the on screen buttons

Screen Zenfone:
5.5 inches (~70.8% screen-to-body ratio)
1080 x 1920 pixels (~401 ppi pixel density)

Screen Oneplus One
5.5 inches (~71.9% screen-to-body ratio)
1080 x 1920 pixels (~401 ppi pixel density)

Cameras both phones have 13MP and 5MP cameras (front & back)), but I will say the software for the Zenfone is much better

Processors the Oneplus One processor it’s a little faster, but the Zenfone is 64 bits vs. Oneplus one 32 bit

Things that I got on the Zenfone, which I do not have in a Oneplus One; 64 Bit, Dual SIM, Back volume buttons, better cameras software.

Now let’s forget about specs, and talk about the Zenfone that I have in my hands, it is a beautiful designed phone rounded edges, nice feeling in my hands, love the fixed soft touch buttons in the bezel with the standardized android layout, they do not take space from the screen like the on screen buttons.
Back volume buttons, I love this feature, it’s what totally makes sense, you can increase or decrease the volume level without losing the grip on the phone, while during a call. All phones should be like that it totally makes sense.

(The only button that in hate in a phone or tablet is the push type home button on Samsung and LG devices)

Top power on button, it also makes sense, is far away from your holding fingers while on a call, nice double tap feature to wake the phone (also available in most of the newer phones).

Zenfone UI / Launcher its better than a Samsung Touchwiz. The Zenfone Launcher UI makes sense and it not over done, tough I prefer to use the Nova Launcher.

Screen resolution very nice and clear, processing speed on how many apps are open in the background is very good, though some lagging is noticeable after 20 apps are open in the background .For comparison purpose the One Plus One, with 35 apps open in the background has little lagging (but the One Plus One has 3GB memory and a faster processor). Also what am I doing with so many apps open in the background? It is idiotic, but I need it to tell you in simple terms how the phone behaves.

So here is what I see the Zenfone 2 16GB/2GB is an excellent medium phone, It’s a great value, affordable and I recommended it to a medium user, you will be very please I suggest you buy a 32GB micro SD card, and make sure, that you set the camera and the applications to install as much as possible in the micro SD card.

For my personal use, if in a future I would it need to replace the OnePlus One with another phone, I will buy the Zenfone 2 64GB/4GB, I consider that it is a flagship phone without the high price of a premium phone.

A lesson to learn, in a year time a flagship phone like the Oneplus one, is not much better than a new medium Zenfone 2, and I my opinion the Oneplus one that I have its an antique compared to the top Zenfone 2 64GB/4GB. Technology changes so fast that buying a top phone $500 +, will only last you for a year may be two, before its top specs are available in a medium phone.

Finally, I can tell you that I do recommend you the Zenfone 2.
Which of the two versions should you buy? the medium 16GB/2GB, or the top 64GB/4GB?, it depends what use you need to give to your phone, if you want to install a lot of apps and games go for the 64GB, if you are a medium user that installs few news apps, airlines apps, or productivity apps, you will be happy with the 16GB version.

But do not confuse the built-in storage with a micro SD storage is two different things a 16GB phone with a micro SD 16GB, is not a 32 GB phone (it’s not 16 + 16, it is 16 & 16) that it’s because when you install apps in your phone, even though you set them to install in the micro SD, only few will do so, and those that install will do only a portion of the app in the Micro SD.

A micro SD card is for the pictures, documents, or music that you want to have in your phone.

HD Game apps, office suites, most of Google apps will install in the internal memory. And as an example out of the 16GB of the Zenfone, with all apps that I need installed already in the phone there is 7 GB left of space in the internal memory, which is plenty of space, and I have a 16GB micro SD, for the pictures, documents, and some music.

The OS in this phone is Android Lollipop 5.0, there are internet rumors that Asus will update this phone to Android 6 Marshmallow, the rumors are not confirmed by Asus, so please do not base your decision to buy it on a OS rumor. (my personal opinion, I think they may do it, since the specs of the device will allow for it)

For some reason I wanted to chat with her and not just out of politeness to while away the time on. The road. She interested me at first sight. She seemed to emanate a mesmerizing sense of style, at the same time cozy and far from glossy samples. When, when landing, I let her pass to the next.

Packing my simple belongings in a bag, I hung it over my shoulder, put the quiver on my back, took the bow in my hands and, like a real Robin. Hood, went to wade through the forest jungle towards the same monotonous hum that interested me. Although the forest was thick enough, there were broken, dilapidated trees underfoot, and the grass was almost waist-deep and lay in a dense green carpet - it was not.

So difficult for me to walk.
