I'm lucky enough to get gigabit internet access at home, from Wave Broadband, with which I'm quite happy. And I don't even need a modem — with my apartment building, I can just jack directly into the Ethernet port in my living room wall. I originally got a Kasada router, but its firmware hasn't been updated in a couple years, so I decided to get a new router that I knew would be updateable with the Free Software DD-WRT firmware.

I got a TRENDnet TEW-812DRU v2, which although it's like 5 years old, is as fast as I need (supporting gigabit ethernet, plus 1.3 Gbps 802.11ac and 450 Mbps 802.11n wireless on separate 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz channels) — and a quarter of the price of comparable new routers. And, importantly, it looked like it was well supported by DD-WRT.

And it did turn out to be well supported by DD-WRT. Having first read through all the forum posts about the TEW-812DRU, I found that, unlike some other routers, you don't need anything special to use DD-WRT on the TEW-812DRU — just upload the new firmware to the router through its web UI and let it do its thing, no tricks needed.

So the first thing I did when I plugged in the router was login to its web UI and flash it with the "Open Source" firmware I downloaded from the TRENDnet TEW-812DRU downloads page. That turned out to be DD-WRT v24-sp2 r23194, compiled on 12/21/2013. I was happy it worked, but that firmware was just way too old.

So next I looked up the TEW-812DRU in the DD-WRT router database, and that prompted me to download something labeled DD-WRT v24-sp2 r23804 (but turned out actually to be r23808), compiled on 3/27/2014. I flashed that firmware through the web UI — but when the router rebooted, it presented me with an "Emergency Web Server" page. I went to look up what that meant via a working internet connection, and when I checked on the router again, the Emergency Web Server page had been replaced with the working DD-WRT web UI. I figure it must have just taken a little extra while for the router to boot everything up, no big deal.

But that firmware was also way older than I was hoping for, so I went searching through the downloads directory of the DD-WRT site — and finally found the latest version of the TEW-812DRU firmware here:

https://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2018/07-16-2018-r36330/trendnet-812DRUv2/

I flashed that firmware through the router's web UI, and was very pleased to see the router reboot with no issues at all, happily running DD-WRT v3.0-r36330 mini — compiled just a few days ago on 7/16/2018. Finally, peace of mind that no bears, pandas, or kittens will be making themselves at home inside my router!

Firmware trendnet router

This device is NOT RECOMMENDED for future use with OpenWrt due to low flash/ram.
DO NOT BUY DEVICES WITH 4MB FLASH / 32MB RAM if you intend to flash an up-to-date and secure OpenWrt version (18.06 or later) onto it! See 4/32 warning for details.

1) This device does not have sufficient resources (flash and/or RAM) to provide secure and reliable operation.
This means that even setting a password or changing simple network settings might not be possible any more, rendering the device effectively useless. See OpenWrt on 4/32 devices what you can do now.

2) OpenWrt support for this device will end after 2019.
19.07 will be the last official build for 4/32 devices. After 19.07, no further OpenWrt images will be built for 4/32 devices. See OpenWrt on 4/32 devices what you can do now.

Compact, plug-mounted 2.4 GHz 802.11n router with single Ethernet port and a USB 2.0 port. Separate port provides USB charging at up to a claimed 2.1 A. 8/32 device with 360 MHz MIPS processor, Ralink RT5350.

FIXME Any text with a light background (like this one) provides instructions for creating the Details Page. When you have filled in correct/useful information (instead of any template that's there) remove the instructions, as well as the that encloses it.

FIXME

  1. This is an empty template that suggests the information that should be present on a well-constructed Device Page. This means, that you have to fill it with life and information.

  2. There are several “fixme” tags with text on a light background (like this text) throughout this template. As you fill in the page, remove those tags so that people can judge its completeness.

  3. When there are no more “fixme” tags left, delete this one too, along with the that encloses it.

Initial Install Experience

Thanks to plastrd on the LEDE forum at Trendnet TEW-714TRU installation without factory.bin. Additional information in that thread related to specifics. In short:

Success!

I ended up having to go back to 17.01.3 and was able to successfully flash the initramfs-kernel from the OEM GUI. This got me read-only function.

Once I was into LuCI I went to the firmware upgrade and attempted to flash the 17.01.3 sysupgrade to get a persistent configuration. This failed with an error that the image was not for my device. I also tried the 17.01.4 sysupgrade and got the same error.
Next I logged in via SSHand tried the sysupgrade from the shell. It immediately terminated with the error:

device generic not supported
Supported devices tew-714tru

Perhaps these images are built with incorrect device settings and that’s why I wasn’t able to initially flash them.
Running out of patience, I forced the sysupgrade with -F and it completed the flash and rebooted to a working state. I’ve got the device running 17.01.4 now and everything seems to be working as it should.

Specific values needed for tftp

FIXME Enter values for “FILL-IN” below

Bootloader tftp server IPv4 address FILL-IN
Bootloader MAC address (special) FILL-IN

TFTP client required IP address FILL-IN

→ generic.sysupgrade

FIXME These are generic instructions. Update with your router's specifics.

If you don't have a GUI (LuCI) available, you can alternatively upgrade via the command line. There are two command line methods for upgrading:

Note: It is important that you put the firmware image into the ramdisk (/tmp) before you start flashing.

sysupgrade

cd /tmp wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/XXX/xxx.abc sysupgrade /tmp/xxx.abc

mtd

If does not support this router, use .

cd /tmp wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/XXX/xxx.abc mtd write /tmp/xxx.abc linux && reboot

→ Basic configuration After flashing, proceed with this.
Set up your Internet connection, configure wireless, configure USB port, etc.

I will describe the steps in steps:

1) Download the new firmware from the official site

At the time of this writing, I downloaded version 2.05B01.

2) Open the router settings by typing in the browser the address 192.168.10.1 and enter the standard login – admin, the password – admin.

3) In the interface that opens, click “Tools” – “Firmware”. In the window that opens, click “Browse” and select the previously downloaded firmware file unpacked from the archive, then click “Upgrade” to start the upgrade process.

Wait until the update is complete, usually 2-5 minutes. At the end, the router will reboot.

Is done. After the firmware settings remained unchanged.
