Final Fantasy 14: 10 Facts You Never Knew About Y'shtola

Y'shtola Rhul may not be the main character of Final Fantasy 14, but she has become a symbol of the game. After all, her character design is gorgeous.

If you watch a lot of anime, read a lot of manga, and play a lot of Japanese video games, then you may know that there is a certain stereotype for catgirls. They often act like cats, make cat puns, and are portrayed as "moe" characters (portrayed as juvenile and cute). However, what's great about Y'shtola is that she is none of these things! She is a refreshing catgirl character.

Updated October 14th, 2021 by Ryan Bamsey: With Endwalker swiftly approaching we're excited to see what Final Fantasy 14 has in store for Y'shtola. We're sure you do too, so here's some trivia about her!

10 Shares The Same Voice As Sera From Dragon Age: Inquisition

In terms of personalities, Y'shtola and Dragon Age: Inquisition's Sera are about as contradictory as you can get. Despite that, they share the same voice actor, Robyn Addison! The two characters have major speech pattern differences, so that is pretty amazing for the voice actor to accomplish.

Note that Addison is Y'shtola's voice actress from Heavensward onwards, not in A Realm Reborn. After A Realm Reborn, there were some major voice actor changes.

9 Has Appeared In Many Other Final Fantasy Games

Y'shtola has become a major crossover character in the Final Fantasy series, becoming something of a mascot for Final Fantasy 14. So far she has made appearances in the following games:

  • Final Fantasy Tactics S
  • Dissidia Final Fantasy NT
  • Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia
  • Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call
  • Pictlogica Final Fantasy
  • Final Fantasy Record Keeper
  • Final Fantasy Brave Exvius
  • War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius

That is just playable versions of her. She has also made non-playable appearances in Final Fantasy Airborne Brigade, Final Fantasy World Wide Words, and has a series of cards in the Final Fantasy Trading Card Game. If that is not enough for you, of course, she also features on a series of cards in Triple Triad!

8 Has Appeared In Non-Final Fantasy Games

Apparently, the Final Fantasy franchise was not enough for Y'shtola. She is even a playable character in the mobile games Monster Strike and Puzzle and Dragons.

Monster Strike is a game you can play on your iOS or Android phone, and it actually has a lot of Final Fantasy crossovers besides just Y'shtola. Puzzle and Dragons is a match-three puzzle game that is super popular in Japan.

7 Is Referenced In Final Fantasy Lost Stranger

Final Fantasy Lost Stranger is a manga with a pretty interesting premise. The story follows a, get this, a Square Enix employee who dies and is reborn in the Final Fantasy world. It's a great read for isekai fans who also like Final Fantasy.

Y'shtola gets referenced in this manga when the protagonist, Shogo Sasaki, is learning about the races in this new world he has awoken in. There is a "Catter" race and he assumes they are Miqo'te and the panel shows him imagining Y'shtola's character design from A Realm Reborn.

6 Has Her Own Sticker Set On The LINE App

LINE is a popular chat messenger app, especially in Japan. Oddly enough, it started off as a disaster response app. Nowadays it is more of a general chatting app.

Like many communication apps, they have a wide variety of stickers. Y'shtola proved to be a popular enough character that she got her own sticker set for users to send to each other. The design is rather cute and chibi too.

5 There Is An Official Y'shtola Necklace

If you love Y'shtola and are feeling kind of rich, then you may have purchased a 30th-anniversary pendant necklace with her Dissidia Final Fantasy design. It cost almost two hundred dollars and was made of sterling silver with a green garnet gem. Unfortunately, these are no longer available.

If that didn't tickle your fancy, however, there's a lot more merch to be found featuring our favorite Miqote! You can even purchase an action figure of her!

4 She Is Sharlayan

This is an easy fact to miss and/or forget as you play through the game. Y'shtola is not originally from Eorzea. She is from a place not yet explored in the game, Sharlayan. In fact, this is also true with others in the Scions of the Seventh Dawn including Alphinaud, Alisaie, Urianger, Moenbryda, and Papalymo.

Besides where she came from, very little is actually known about Y'shtola's past. Some players assume she came from the Y' tribe due to her namesake and being a Keeper of the Sun. Others theorize that she was not raised in a tribe at all and was adopted.

3 Her Half-Sister Is Important To The Summoner Quests

You probably would not know this unless you play the Summoner class in the game. It is during Heavensward that you learn of Y'shtola's half-sister, Y'mhitra - while they had different mothers, they shared the same father. We know little of their relationship besides their blood-relation with each other.

Related: Things We Wish We Knew Before Starting Final Fantasy 14: Shadowbringers

When choosing to be a Summoner in the game, it is Y'mhitra who advises you, gives you quests, and goes on adventures with you. Like Y'shtola though, she is a Conjurer.

2 She Becomes A Black Mage

When the Shadowbringers trailer came out, fans argued about the scene with Y'shtola. Why was she being called Matoya? Also, is she a Black Mage now?

Now that Shadowbringers has been released, we can confirm that she has become a black mage. If you take Y'shthola into your party through the Trust System, the proof is presented. You will see that instead of a healer, she is now a DPS black mage. Aesthetically, it also makes sense since Shadowbringers is all about becoming "Heroes of Darkness" rather than light.

1 She Can See With Magic Even Though She Is Blind

Y'shtola's blindness has often been a confusing topic for fans. In fact, it is not mentioned for a long time even when she first returns during Heavensward. It is an easily forgettable trait since she acts like she can see most everything anyway.

This is all because Y'shtola uses Aether to sense what is around her. In other words: Magic. Based on this fact, she can and cannot sense whatever the plot likely demands. How did she sense the murals in Shadowbringers? Apparently Aether. However, this does limit her at times. For example, she does not recognize you when you first meet in Shadowbringers.

"A Miqo'te conjurer and a Scion of the Seventh Dawn who is not only capable of advanced magic but also well-versed in ancient language and lore. Wise and mysterious, she is an expert in conjury—the art of healing. She is a woman of strong convictions, but that's also what makes her stubborn from time to time."

Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia description

Y'shtola is a playable character in the upcoming arcade reboot of the Dissidia series. She is the main representative of Final Fantasy XIV

How to Unlock[]

Y'shtola is playable from the outset

Y'shtola's original character design was overseen by Akihiko Yoshida with little to no alterations from Tetsuya Nomura. She is depicted as a fairly young adult with dark skin, platinum blond hair with hair ornaments and green eyes. As a Miqo'te, she has cat-like ears and a tail along with stripe markings on her cheeks. Additional, as she is a Seeker of the Sun, her eyes have cat-like slits. Hidden by her clothing is an Archon's Mark. Her appearance in the arcade version is taken from her original appearance from Legacy to A Realm Reborn where she wears a completely white dalmatic, dark blue trousers and brown shoes. Standard for Scion gear is a goggle-like device used to detect aether.

  • Scion Healer: Her outfit in Heavensward and beyond as well as her default outfit in the console version's story mode. She wears a black and white robe, black thigh-high boots with red soles and her aetheric device is relocated on her shoulder. Though her physical appearance remains largely unchanged, the hairpieces are gone and is blind as shown by her cloudy silver irises, due to having used the Flow spell.

As a Marksman, Y'shotla plays a keepaway game, using many of the spells used by magic ranged DPS classes from the original game such as Stone, Ruin and Virus (Bio in the original game). Instead of the more straightforward characters though, Y'shtola is able to play a more trickster role by laying down traps like Blizzara , which acts as a landmine that freezes enemies unwary enough to wander into them. True to her role as a Conjurer, her Vivifying Lance HP attack can support the party by healing the party when it connects.

Following an update in 2019, Y'shtola was massively reworked, losing all of her Arcanist skills and turned into a stance-based character in where she shifts Classes between her native Conjurer role and its dark counterpart, Thaumaturge where she gains access to Black Magic spells. She loses her trap-based status effect moveset in favor of more powerful, straightforward projectiles

Brave Attacks[]

HP Attacks[]

EX Skill[]

  • Aetherial Pulse (Conjurer): When activated, Y'shtola created a massive field of Aether. When holding down the button, she and any of her allies within the field will have their Bravery and HP gradually increased until the button is released. While she can still take damage from Bravery attacks, she has super armor for the duration of the field's activity.
  • Foul (Thaumaturge): Y'shtola generates a large field of dark energy generated by a crystal. Any enemy standing in this field has their Bravery sapped away.

  • Though Y'shtola is a Conjurer in the original game, her moveset consists of spells used by other magic-based DPS and healing classes like Ruin from Arcanist and Blizzara (Blizzard II) from Thaumaturge as it was possible (and necessary) for players to level up other classes before being able to upgrade to Jobs. This requirement along with the cross-class abilities however, were removed with the release of Stormblood in favor of Role abilities.
  • One of Y'shtola's quotes "By your leave", is a quote often said by fellow Scion Urianger Arghest.
  • Y'shtola's rework came to a surprise to many as the character was never previously known for using any spells or abilities tied to the class. This confusion was later cleared up during the 2019 Paris Final Fantasy Fan Festival where in the expansion for Final Fantasy XIV - Shadowbringers - that she would take up the role of a Black Mage.

Y'shtolais a playable character in Dissidia Final Fantasy NTand its arcade version, serving as the main representative of Final Fantasy XIV. She is a Marksman type character, and her EX Skills are Aetherial Pulseand Foul. Y'shtola is a new character who did not appear in the PlayStation PortableDissidia Final Fantasy games.

Y'shtola's default player name is Nameless Scion. Her manikin counterpart, the Mirage of a Conjurer, is aquamarine.

Y'shtola's default outfit, "Scion of the Seventh Dawn", is her original appearance in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. She has tan skin and white hair, and wears a white dalmatic with blue trousers. This costume has two alternate colorations. The one based on her half-sister Y'mhitra recolors her dalmatic cyan with gray patterns, her trousers black, and her shoes white. Another recolors her dalmatic black with brown patterns, her trousers black, and her shoes brown with red laces and soles.

Her first alternate outfit, "Scion Healer's Robe", is her main appearance from Heavensward and Stormblood. She wears a long-sleeved white dress top with red accents, black shorts with black thigh-high boots and a black bolero shrug over her shoulders. Her hair has slightly longer pigtails in the front, and her eyes are pale white. This is also her main attire in the story of Dissidia Final Fantasy NT. The first alternate coloration recolors her dress top red with white accents, while the second recolors her dress gray with blue accents.

Her second alternate outfit, "Scion Sorceress's Robe", is her main appearance from Shadowbringers onwards. The first alternate coloration changes her robes to red and her fur black, making it resemble a Red Mage's attire. The second alternate coloration recolors the main dress to a dark shade of blue, the feathers a leaf green and her brooch purple, making the ensemble more closely resemble the Seventh Hell attire from Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood, a gear set awarded to Level 70 Black Mages.

Protested Arina, but it's too late. They laid her on the sofa and began to undress her. The blouse and jeans quickly flew off, she remained in the bra and panties, which the girls also took off. Naked Arina lay in front of her friends, who were clearly flushed.

Of course, Arina said nothing to the groom.
