When it comes to holiday music, Christmas songs take all the glory. You don't see radio stations changing their formats every spring to incorporate their favorite Easter songs. What are everybody's favorite Easter songs, anyway? Sure, everyone can rattle off their favorite Christmas tunes — or at least a favorite Christmas tune (hello, Mariah Carey fans) — but Easter songs are much harder to nail down. (There's only so many times you can listen to "Easter Parade" or "Peter Cottontail.")

With that in mind, we've rounded up our favorite songs to play on Easter Sunday. They're mostly of the worshipful kind, but you can find lots of musical styles mixed in, including folk, pop, country and one of the most successful Broadway soundtracks of all time. Throw them on as you decorate eggs, fill baskets with Easter gifts, do Easter crafts, run an Easter egg hunt or brainstorm a creative dinner menu. With these in your back pocket, Christmas music will get a run for its money. (Did we miss any of your favorite Easter songs? Let us know which ones top your playlist in the comments!)

"Evidence" by Josh Baldwin

This song explores the classic theme of finding strength through faith, and the Easter message is really brought home when Josh Baldwin sings, "See the cross, the empty grave, the evidence is endless, all my sin washed away."

8 Christian Songs That Will Make You Cry

I have been singing since as far back as I can remember. Most will agree that one of the most difficult things to do is sing when you are crying. I can remember some songs that I have sung solo that brought me to tears for at least the first 10 times I ever sang them in rehearsal. Singing requires practice and concentration and so, in time, I am able to sing the song without tears when I focus on technique rather than lyrics.

10 Powerful Christian Songs

Here are eight Christian songs that make me cry. I believe these are some that will make you cry when you close your eyes and meditate upon the lyrics. Here they are in alphabetical order.

Blessings

I first heard this song by Laura Story when my daughter sent me a link to it during a time when I was in the valley. My eyes were opened and my spirit was refreshed to remember that sometimes trials in this life are just God’s mercies in disguise.

Favorite Lyric: “What if my greatest disappointments, or the aching of this life, is the revealing of a greater thirst this world can't satisfy. What if trials of this life, the rain, the storms, the hardest nights are Your mercies in disguise?”

1 Peter 4:12-13 - “Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.

How Great Thou Art

Truth be told: I cannot solo on this hymn. I have tried to rehearse it over and over, yet the overwhelming emotion of all that God has done brings tears every time I sing it. I would much rather hear someone else sing it and enjoy my tears of sorrow and joy.

Favorite Lyric: “And when I think that God, His Son not sparing Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing He bled and died to take away my sin”

Romans 5:8 - “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

I love how Crystal Lewis does this one in the video below:

I Can Only Imagine

Bart Millard of Christian Contemporary’s MercyMe wrote this song during a time when he was grieving the death of his father. His thoughts of Heaven are woven into this beautiful song that has helped others deal with the loss of loved ones as well. Tears of joy are what stream down my face as I can only imagine what Heaven will be like.

Favorite Lyric: “Surrounded by Your glory, what will my heart feel? Will I dance for You Jesus or in awe of you be still? Will I stand in Your presence of to my knees will I fall? Will I sing Hallelujah, will I be able to speak at all? I can only imagine”

1 Peter 1:3-4 - “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you”

I Will Rise

I do okay with this one until the bridge, and then I can cry a river in anticipation of hearing heavenly voices when I finally meet my Savior. Those who know me know that Chris Tomlin is one of or even my favorite worship leader and song writer at this time. He wrote this with his good friend and frequent co-writer Pastor Louie Giglio. Inspiration for the song came during a lunchtime conversation that the two of them were having about the lack of songs that encourage others how to get through the tough times in life. [1] This is a great song for Easter or any time at all. See if you can listen to the whole thing without shedding a tear.

Revelation 5:11-13 - “And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever."

My Redeemer Lives

I have a sister that loves this song and so we have been known to cry together on this one. There are so many things around us that remind us that we have a living, loving, merciful and gracious Father. This song will make you meditate upon His wonderful creation and how very blessed we are to know the One True God.

Favorite Lyric: “The very same God that spins things in orbit runs to the weary, the worn and the weak. And the same gentle hands that hold me when I'm broken They conquered death to bring me victory.”

Psalms 104:10-14 - “He sendeth the springs into the valleys, which run among the hills. They give drink to every beast of the field: the wild asses quench their thirst. By them shall the fowls of the heaven have their habitation, which sing among the branches. He watereth the hills from his chambers: the earth is satisfied with the fruit of thy works. He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth;”

Untitled Hymn (Come to Jesus)

This song, with a simple melody, progresses through the life of a sinner that has been saved by grace. Changes in key and dynamics are what help this song as it tells of the changes that are possible when we walk in the Spirit. One line in the song says “Cry to Jesus, cry to Jesus, cry to Jesus and Live!” How do you sing that without crying? I have included all of the lyrics here for you.

Weak and wounded sinner

Lost and left to die

O, raise your head, for love is passing by

Come to Jesus, Come to Jesus, Come to Jesus and live!

Now your burden's lifted

And carried far away

And precious blood has washed away the stain, so

Sing to Jesus, Sing to Jesus, Sing to Jesus and live!

And like a newborn baby

Don't be afraid to crawl

And remember when you walk

Sometimes we fall...so

Fall on Jesus, Fall on Jesus, Fall on Jesus and live!

Sometimes the way is lonely

And steep and filled with pain

So if your sky is dark and pours the rain, then

Cry to Jesus, Cry to Jesus, Cry to Jesus and live!

O, and when the love spills over

And music fills the night

And when you can't contain your joy inside, then

Dance for Jesus, Dance for Jesus, Dance for Jesus and live!

And with your final heartbeat

Kiss the world goodbye

Then go in peace, and laugh on Glory's side, and

Fly to Jesus, Fly to Jesus, Fly to Jesus and live!

2 Corinthians 5:17 - "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."

Via Dolorosa

This is an inspirational ballad that is sung in English and Spanish and was made popular several years ago by Sandi Patty. It is a dramatic retelling of when Jesus carried the cross to Calvary. I am able to sing this without tears, but I have never sung it to a congregation who sat dry eyed.

Favorite Lyric: “Down the Via Dolorosa called the way of suffering. Like a lamb came the Messiah, Christ the King, but He chose to walk that road out of His love for you and me. Down the Via Dolorosa, all the way to Calvary.”

John 19:17-18 - “And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.”

Walk by Faith

This song by Jeremy Camp was released at a time when our family experienced the loss of a dear friend who was only 20 years old. We miss him but he left behind fond memories and his strong testimony for Christ. Those were some dark days during his funeral and mourning period and this is the song that my youngest daughter hung onto “even when she could not see”. It seemed like a broken road at the time but I am so happy to share that at this young man’s funeral and those days surrounding, I saw more people come to know Jesus than ever before. I cry when I hear this song out of pure joy that someone like Jeremy Camp has written this and so many others that bring the Scriptures to life and inspire us to do what God would have us to do. This song holds a special place in my heart, as does the young man who is now with our Father in Heaven.

Favorite Lyric: “Well I will walk by faith even when I cannot see. Well because this broken road prepares Your will for me.”

1 Corinthians 5:6-8 “Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.”

Powerful Christian Songs: Conclusion

These are just eight of the Christian songs that will make you cry that come to the top of my head. Perhaps you have one – we would love to hear your story. Leave a comment and tell us all about it.

Above All [with lyrics] - Lenny LeBlanc

Crucified (Army of Lovers song)

1991 single by Army of Lovers

1991 single by Army of Lovers

"Crucified" is a 1991 song by the Swedish band Army of Lovers. It is the first single from their second album, Massive Luxury Overdose and the seventh single to be released by the band. It was released on May 1991 (in Sweden), February–April 1992 (in the UK and US), and July 2013 (Crucified 2013). It was written by Alexander Bard, Anders Wollbeck and Jean-Pierre Barda and features Barda (vocals, drums), Bard (vocals, computer) and La Camilla (vocals, bass). The song was successful in several European countries, including Belgium, where it reached the number-one,[1] and Germany, Sweden, Austria and Switzerland, where it reached the Top 10. In the United States, "Crucified" became a huge club hit and radio favorite, debuting at number 6 on the Billboard Dance singles chart and spending a total of 14 weeks in the Top 20. The two remixes available on the CD maxi and vinyl 12" maxi are made by Nuzak. The track samples the drum break from James Brown's Funky Drummer.

In 2013, Army of Lovers made a new version of the song, simply called 'Crucified 2013'. It contains new vocals from Dominika Peczynski.[2]

Bard's future music project, Gravitonas uses a sample of this song on the track "Sacrifice" from their 2012 Black Ceremony EP.[citation needed]

In 2021, Azerbaijani singer Efendi sampled the first few seconds of Crucified for her track Mata Hari, which would represent Azerbaijan in Eurovision 2021.

Kurt Cobain of the hugely successful alternative rock group Nirvana praised the band in his posthumously published journals, specifically the song "Crucified."[3]

Critical reception[edit]

AllMusic editor Ned Raggett described the song as a "totally over-the-top disco anthem on all fronts that takes ABBA's winning combination of memorable hooks and harmonies as inspiration and slathers a load of glitter and make-up over the whole thing." He noted further that "having ultracampy lyrical asides like "I cry, I pray, mon dieu" doesn't hurt the sheer giddiness at work, and neither do the "I'm crucified like my saviour" chorus, church organ and twangy Duane Eddy guitar."[4]Billboard wrote that it is a "super-hot slammin' houser".[5] Bevan Hannah from The Canberra Times wrote, "Judging by the video for their first single release Crucified, their image was carefully plotted, combining cabaret style costumes and graphics with groovy European dance rhythms."[6] A reviever from Music Week wrote that the song is "a bizarre pop/dance confection, both commercial and camp."[7]James Hamilton from the magazine's RM Dance Update commented that it is "camp and corny party fun from Sweden, this Abba-ishly chorused, phonetic guy rapped, strings swirled and — just to cap it all! — Duane Eddy-ish guitar twanged 0-122bpm jiggly jumper sounds like a pop hit with wide gimmick appeal".[8]Newcastle Evening Chronicle called it a "clever almost choral rock approach on a lively danceable number."[9] They noted "the ebullient bounce" of the track.[10]People Magazine wrote in their review, that "disco goes to church in this hip-hop hallelujah".[11]Sophie Lawrence reviewed the song for Smash Hits, writing, "It's one of those records where you can imagine everyone at a disco dancing around with their hands in the air, isn't it? I like it. It's got a gospel feel and really good harmonies on it."[12]

Chart performance[edit]

"Crucified" went on becoming very successful on the charts in Europe, peaking at number-one in Belgium. It remains to date one of the bands biggest hits, reaching the Top 10 also in Austria, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland in 1991. In the United Kingdom, the single peaked at number 31 on the UK Singles Chart on February 23, 1992.[13] On the Eurochart Hot 100, it climbed to number 14. Outside Europe, "Crucified" was successful also in the US, where it peaked at number 6 on both the BillboardDance Club Songs and the BillboardDance/Electronic Singles Sales.

Music video[edit]

A music video was made to accompany the song. It was directed by Swedish directors Fredrik Boklund and Martin Persson. The video was uploaded to YouTube in May 2016. As of August 2020, it has got more than 9,2 million views.[14]

Usage in media[edit]

The music video of "Crucified" was used in an episode of American adultanimated sitcomBeavis and Butt-Head.[15]

The song was played in Gabriel Aghion's 1996 film, Pédale douce, and was thus included in the track listing of the soundtrack. It was also played in the film Marock (2005),[citation needed] and was in the video game Just Dance 4 on the Wii.[16]

Covers by other artists[edit]

The song has been covered by the Swedish band Ghost in their extended play titled If You have Ghost.

10 Modern Worship Songs on the Cross of Jesus Christ

Janelle has a degree in theology. She loves God first, loves good, clean movies, and music that inspires and help people.

We can all turn to the Cross of Jesus Christ to receive forgiveness from God. The Cross is there to help us understand God's plan for mankind and receive His everlasting love.

Many hymns like "The Old Rugged Cross," "Near the Cross," "At the Cross," "There is Power in the Blood," and others have opened my heart to understand how our Lord poured out his soul for us when He gave us His only Son. Songs venerating the Cross should be sung every Sunday and in services during the week, not just for Easter.

Here are 10 worship songs about Jesus' Cross that have touched my heart and helped me always to remember the purpose of Christ's death—his sacrifice and love for all.

  1. "Man of Sorrows" by Hillsong Worship
  2. "Jesus Thank You" by Sovereign Grace Music
  3. "What Would I Have Done" by Bethel Music
  4. "Jesus, Son of God" by Chris Tomlin and Christy Nockels
  5. "Great, Great God" by Gateway Worship
  6. "Victor's Crown" by Darlene Zschech
  7. "To the Cross" by Paul Baloche
  8. "This Is Amazing Grace" by Phil Wickham
  9. "Power of the Cross" by Natalie Grant
  10. "Glorious Day (Living He Loved Me)" by Casting Crowns

I included the lyric videos and a short description of each song below—plus two bonus songs!

That if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you shall be saved. For with the heart man believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

— Romans 10:9-10

1. "Man of Sorrows" by Hillsong Worship

"Man of Sorrows" is a song by Hillsong Worship (formerly Hillsong Live), a worship music group out of Hillsong Church in Sydney, Australia. They sing from their hearts and souls about Jesus life, crucifixion, and resurrection.

Oh that rugged cross my salvation, Where your love poured out over me

Now my soul cries out Hallelujah, Praise and honor unto thee.

2. "Jesus Thank You" by Sovereign Grace Music

In their song, "Jesus Thank You," Sovereign Grace Music brings a full understanding of why Jesus died on the Cross for us.

Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

– Romans 5:1-2

3. "What Would I Have Done" by Bethel Music

Worship leaders, Brian and Jenn Johnson from Bethel Church in Redding, CA, sing a wonderfully beautiful song about how we must never forget the ultimate price Jesus paid for our salvation.

I will not forget the cross, the pain that You endured for us
Where You carried brokenness and shame
Never to forget the day Your love broke through to make a way
For hope to rise within my heart again

What would I have done if it wasn't for Your love
The love that tore the veil inside my heart
What would I have become if it wasn't for Your blood
The blood You gave for all on the cross."

4. "Jesus, Son of God" by Chris Tomlin With Christy Nockels

Worship leader and songwriter, Chris Tomlin, with Christy Nockels, released "Jesus, Son of God" in 2013. This is from his album, Passion: White Flag. It is a truly inspirational song that draws us to the cling to the Cross.

On the altar of our praise, Let there be no higher name
Jesus Son of God, You laid down Your perfect life
You are the sacrifice, Jesus Son of God
You are Jesus Son of God

You took our sin, You bore our shame
You rose to life, You defeated the grave
A love like this, the world has never known.

5. "Great, Great God" by Gateway Worship

"Great, Great God" is by Gateway Worship Team from Gateway Church in Texas. It tells of the importance of the Cross of Christ and how it affects each one of us personally.

6. "Victor's Crown" by Darlene Zschech

This amazing song, "Victor's Crown," is from well-known worship leader, Darlene Zschech. It was written by Kari Jobe, Israel Houghton, and Darlene Zschech. This is a phenomenally anointed album that will draw you to the Heart of Christ and will keep you thirsting more of the Lord. Here are some of the lyrics:

At the cross the work was finished
You were buried in the ground
But the grave could not contain You
For You wear the Victor's crown.

Hallelujah
You have overcome
You have overcome
Hallelujah
Jesus, You have overcome the world.

Every high thing must come down
Every stronghold shall be broken
You wear the Victor's crown
You overcome, You overcome.

7. "To The Cross" by Paul Baloche

Anointed worship leader and songwriter, Paul Baloche, in his song, "To the Cross," tells of how we should run to the Cross of Jesus Christ and surrender all we have in order to receive freedom and forgiveness.

8. "This Is Amazing Grace" by Phil Wickham

Contemporary Christian singer and songwriter, Phil Wickham, in his song, "This Is Amazing Grace," poured out his heart and expressed all that the Cross has accomplished.

For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.

– Ephesians 2:8

9. "Power of the Cross" by Natalie Grant

Natalie Grant is a contemporary Christian music singer and songwriter. Here are some of the lyrics to this song:

That's the power of the Cross
See the chains fall
That's the power of the Cross

10. Glorious Day (Living He Loved Me) by Casting Crowns

Contemporary Christian band, Casting Crowns, gives us a modern take on a traditional hymn, "One Day," written by John Wilber Chapman.

One day they led Him up Calvary’s mountain

One day they nailed Him to die on a tree

Suffering anguish, despised and rejected

Bearing our sins, my Redeemer is He

Hands that healed nations, stretched out on a tree

And took the nails for me
