Bethesda to Shut Down Fallout 76's Vault 94 Indefinitely
Bethesda has announced that Fallout 76’s Vault 94 will be shutting down soon. After going through community feedback, Bethesda has discovered that Vault 94 and its missions are unable to deliver an experience that the developers wanted to offer.
Players still have plenty of time to complete Vault Missions as Vault 94 will shut down when the Wastelanders update gets released. After the Vault is disabled, all of its rewards including the exclusive Power Armor sets and Vault Steel will be available via other means. The developers will share more details about these rewards when the Wastelanders update arrives. Bethesda has also revealed that new high-level experiences will be added to the game in future updates. Fallout 76's new plant-infested Vault 94 is a bolthole for masochists
Fallout 76 is a weird beast. It’s mired in bugs and poor decisions, but somehow manages to birth funny player stories, like the people role-playing as NPCs, or the tale of those who have invented a lethal game show. This is why I’ve found myself dedicating over 100 hours to the multiplayer shooter and why I leapt at the chance to explore the new Vault 94 raid added as part of the latest patch.
But having spent some time with the first of these raids, called Dead in the Water, I can’t help but feel disappointed. From servers that disconnect if you so much as look at them the wrong way, to dismal loot drops, the raid was frustrating to say the least, soaking up tons of ammunition and resources with little reward or return for my efforts.
The raid works like this. Upon entering Vault 94, you step into your own private instance, meaning you won’t be able to encounter anyone who isn’t already on your team. Inside, you’ll be able to examine some terminals to find out more about the vault and then choose between three different levels of difficulty: a novice mode with no timers, a standard mode with timers and stronger enemies, or an expert mode that will have even the most experienced players crying out for Todd. Once you’ve selected the difficulty that’s right for you or your team, a bulkhead door will open and you’ll be tasked with draining the inside of the vault and killing the legions of ghouls and Mirelurks within.
I enjoyed the overall theme of the vault. Reading the logs reveals that pacifists once lived here, tending to a seed stockpile that was going to repopulate the world’s flora after the nukes dropped. Inevitably something went wrong, resulting in the monstrous vines and other radioactive flora enveloping and suffocating your surroundings. This dense and overgrown jungle vault gives off a mysterious and unsettling vibe, entirely befitting of the vault’s location at the northern tip of the swampy Mire.
As a moderately high-level player, I entered the vault fairly confident, but it wasn’t long before I ran into problems. A horde of ghouls quickly surrounded me and I found myself struggling to heal, with little time to breathe. Eventually, I managed to clear them out with my Ghoulslayer’s Grognak Axe and reached another room where the objective was to start repairing pipes (much like in the Powering Up Monongah event where players need to get a power plant up and running again). I ran around the open area, fixing what I could while attempting to avoid the Mirelurks. Everything was going well, but then I fell into the centre of the room and got caught between two Mirelurk Queens. They killed me and I respawned back at the very start of the event.
I tried a couple more times, gradually getting past the Mirelurk Queens, but the run always ended the same way. I would respawn outside the event, with less ammo and fewer stimpaks than when I started. A major problem is that the loot earned from the event is so slight and the cost of running the raid so great that you’ll quickly find yourself running short on supplies, if you haven’t already built up a stockpile. A fact that has led to some entrepreneurial players setting up shop outside the vault to restock those who want to jump straight back in.
On top of this, I constantly found myself battling waves of level 60+ enemies and receiving the same amount of experience that I’d get from clearing out a low-level area like Morgantown. This is due to Bethesda nerfing the amount of experience that you get for killing enemies inside the vault. Combined, it’s not an event that would entice players to keep coming back to try their luck.
It’s a shame when you consider just how useful a decent raid event could be inside of Fallout 76. At the moment, if you want to discover high-level gear your best bet is to hop between servers and repeatedly farm out the same areas, killing legendary creatures and looting their remains. Vault 94 would have been a great alternative to this, keeping players on the same server and giving them a fast and repeatable method of acquiring legendary items and levelling up.
Another issue I struggled with was the absence of decent matchmaking tools or text chat to help solo players find groups and communicate efficiently. Vault 94 is a labyrinth, meaning that teamwork is essential to running the raid successfully at higher levels. At present, the best method for locating other players is to simply hang around the entrance of Vault 94 and invite randoms until someone accepts or you bump into another player who has the same plan. Even then, you’re still in a constant battle with the game to try to make everything work as intended.
After half an hour of searching, for instance, I finally managed to find a decent group of high-level players ready to take on the vault. Then the server disconnected and forced me back to the main menu. This happened on a few occasions, with no shortcut available to let me quickly jump back in and join my teammates.
That’s not to say I didn’t find anything to enjoy about the raid. It injects some much-needed difficulty back into Fallout 76 for higher-level players. For a while now, Appalachia hasn’t really posed much of a threat, with most enemies going down within 2-3 hits. The sheer volume of enemies and threats in the planthole, coupled with the tasks you’ll have to carry out, present a very real challenge and shows the promise of what the raid can become given greater rewards and a bit more love.
For now, the spoils don’t seem worth it, unless you’ve got the resources to burn through and a faithful squad at your side. But even then, you’ll still have to contend with the biggest threat of all: the ropey servers and assortment of other glitches.
Bethesda is Removing Vault 94 From Fallout 76 in Wastelanders Update
Bethesda has announced during a recent Inside the Valut that Vault 94 will be removed from Fallout 76 when the Wastelanders update releases. The rewards that are currently offered through the Vault and related missions will eventually be made available through other means. Although Bethesda hasn’t stated what the other means are, some will likely be part of the Atomic Shop considering the trajectory of the game. The Wastelanders update has no release date but it’s currently being tested right now. Fallout 76 is available on PC, Xbox One and PS4 for those who dare to brave the newest wasteland.
“Last year, we were excited to open the door to Vault 94 and bring you repeatable high-level content in the form of Vault Raids,” said Bethesda. “Through community feedback we’ve received and our own monitoring since that time, we’ve decided that Vault 94 and its Missions are not delivering the quality of experience that we had hoped to provide. As a result, we are currently planning to shut down Vault 94 alongside the release of the Wastelanders update.”
Bethesda’s Inside the Valut continued: “While that update is still a little ways off, we wanted to give you early notice so that you still have plenty of time to complete some more Vault Missions if you so choose before we seal up Vault 94 indefinitely. When the Vault is disabled, we are planning to make all of its rewards, including the exclusive Power Armor sets and Vault Steel, achievable through other means. We don’t have information to share on how and where you will be able to earn those rewards right now.”

Fallout 76's raid in Vault 94 detailed
Bethesda's latest Fallout 76 blog is a deep dive into Vault 94, the location of its first four-player raid. While the blog notes this raid can be attempted solo, " a full team of level 50+ characters" is recommended.
Vault 94 was filled with pacifist gardeners who were given the job of restoring the Wasteland after the bombs and armed primarily with packets of seeds. The now empty vault has since been taken over by nature, which would sound like a recipe for vine monsters if Vault 22 in New Vegas hadn't done that already.
Fallout 76's new instancing will be used for the first time in this raid, insuring that teams aren't interrupted by other players (and that more powerful players advancing ahead of you don't raise the local enemy level).
There will be three different missions inside Vault 94, each of which will be active for a week before cycling on to the next. Each mission will also have three difficulty modes, with better loot on higher difficulties. Said loot will involve plans for new power armor, and a unique resource called Vault 94 steel for crafting them.

Fallout 76 Is Shutting Down Vault 94
Bethesda announced on Thursday that it's planning on shutting down Fallout 76's Vault 94, the first Vault that brought players the developer's vision of high-level Vault Raids. That feature was added in August 2018 when Bethesda opened the doors to Vault 94 wherein players were said to expect "some of the most challenging experiences" in the game. Fast-forward to this week and Bethesda said the Vault's doors will be sealed after it was determined that the first Vault Raid wasn't delivering the quality experience Bethesda had hoped for.
News of the Vault's closure was shared in Thursday's Inside the Vault post where Bethesda announced its plans to shut down this Vault Raid. The studio explained its reasoning and said it's been monitoring feedback and has come to the conclusion that the Vault must be closed.
"Last year, we were excited to open the door to Vault 94 and bring you repeatable high-level content in the form of Vault Raids," Bethesda said. "Through community feedback we've received and our own monitoring since that time, we've decided that Vault 94 and its Missions are not delivering the quality of experience that we had hoped to provide. As a result, we are currently planning to shut down Vault 94 alongside the release of the Wastelanders update."
If you're a Fallout 76 player who hasn't completed the Vault 94 Raid yet or hasn't gotten everything out of it that you'd like to, you have a while to do so since it won't be shut down until the Wastelanders update releases. We still don't know when that massive expansion is supposed to drop, but it's "still a little ways off," according to the developers.

Bethesda closed by saying it's still committed to bringing "more high-level experiences to the game in future updates." It wasn't specified whether those would be new iterations of Vault Raids or something different, but expect to har more on that later.
Vault 94 is opening up in Fallout 76 on Tuesday, Aug. 20 (on Windows PC), and a preview from Bethesda Game Studios this week describes the game’s first Vault Raid. It’s an instanced event, meaning the only other human players you’ll find in there are the ones on your team.
For that, “we recommend assembling a full team of level 50+ characters to take on the timed and instanced missions you’ll encounter,” Bethesda wrote. What you find in there is all yours, the raid, the encounters and, of course, the loot. Bethesda says it is putting to use its “new Instancing technology” for the first time.
That’s why the raid’s launch will be staggered across platforms. PC players get it first on Tuesday and then, if raids “run smoothly over the following days, we will open the Vault for consoles as well,” Bethesda said. The patch delivering the Vault 94 raid will still be delivered on the same day to all platforms.
Inside the Vault itself, players will get three different missions on a weekly rotational basis. The first is “Dead in the Water,” to be followed by “Meltdown” and “Washout.” All the missions will last one week, and have three difficulty modes, an untimed Novice setting followed by Standard and Expert difficulties. Loot corresponds to difficulty, of course.
Canonically, Vault 94 was the home of pacifist Dwellers “armed with nothing but a stockpile of seeds and the Vault Suits on their backs.” So, hippies. Their door opened a year after the bombs dropped and out they went to restore the Earth’s bounty. It didn’t go so well for them.
Inside sounds something sorta like Vault 22 from Fallout: New Vegas. It’s “completely overrun by nature. Yet,” Bethesda writes, “something within now threatens its destruction.” Players are there to save the Vault, learn what happened to the hippies, and get their merch.
Among that loot will be plans to craft new Vault Armor sets, such as the Strangler Heart armor pictured above. Vault Armor plans can’t be earned in the Novice mode, so that’s basically just your practice run difficulty. The raid also awards a new resource, Vault Steel, which is necessary to build the armor. Neither steel nor the armor crafted from it can be dropped, traded or sold.
All that said, since new code is being put into use, be prepared for the chance this doesn’t work right the first time. “Staggering the release of Vault 94 between platforms will allow us more flexibility to address issues that may not be apparent until larger playerbase gains access to Vault 94 than our internal playtests allow,” Bethesda said. “If significant issues are discovered, we can disable the Raid on PC until we’ve implemented the necessary fixes, and then bring Vault 94 back online for all platforms.”

The newest update aside of bug fixes also improves the way players interact with quest UI. Main Quest will now display square quest markers on the map, while Side, Misc and Daily quest displays diamond-shaped markers.
Fallout 76 has been a big headache for Bethesda, originally an ambitious project to deliver a sand-box game when players would basically survive on a dystopian world, the game turned out to be full of glitches, and didn’t please fans. Bethesda is still doing everything possible to improve the experience of Fallout 76.
