Who even needs a plate carrier?

As of writing this article we’ve played over a thousand airsoft games: casual, competitive, MILSIM, you name it. One of us even used to work in the airsoft industry at one of the major retailers in Southern California, and another one of us also used to work at 5.11 – one of the top tactical gear companies in the US.

So, we’re pretty dang confident in our choice of battle belts. We’ve ran through dozens in our time, some of them ended up being so used they’ve folded over almost inside out. The best battle belts for airsoft should be capable of standing up to pretty hard use, and we’ve had our fair share of that.

Let us save you the headache and hassle of wasting hundreds of dollars trying on different models and let you know exactly what are the best battle belts you should buy based on your budget (although there is one top quality pick we recommend above the rest). Make sure to check each entry out in depth.

The Factors we Consider

  • Comfort – How does these battle belts feel when I wear them. Do they fit in an uncomfortable place when I sit down? Do I notice movement when I sprint or play airsoft? Do I even notice it’s there and does it have a inner lining that doesn’t chafe my skin?
  • Construction – how is the general construction of these battle belts? Is the stitching well done or sloppy? What material is it made of and will it stand up to a full body drag? How precise is the PALS webbing and can I expect it to hold up to abuse?
  • Carrying Capacity – Is the PALS nylon webbing placed in spots that allow me to carry my needed gear? If I needed to go heavy on pouches or equipment could I without worrying about the battle belt breaking? Would you need to also wear a plate carrier with this to carry your primary weapon and magazines?
  • Profile – How wide does it sit? Can I get in on a tight squeeze if I needed to? Do these battle belts add a lot of extra width to my general profile?

Gear Specs
Construction:1000D
Colors:Black, Khaki, Multicam, Multicam Arid, Multicam Black, Multicam Tropic
Material:Nylon

PROS

  • Rugged construction for an affordable price.
  • Breathable wide padding keeps belt comfortable.
  • Consistent stitching for the MOLLE nylon webbing with loads of space.
  • Side panels near pants allow for the installation of thigh holsters.

CONS

  • Included tactical belt is serviceable, but make sure to change it out fairly soon.
  • wider profile than some of the other selections.

Emerson Gear was known as being the main competitor to Condor Outdoor back when we were working in the airsoft guns industry. Emerson was an outdoor manufacturer making affordable replica tactical equipment like plate carriers, chest rigs, gloves, tactical belts, and other stuff. Most starting players would end up with either a Condor or Emerson piece of gear, and for the most part it was functional. They were great pieces of gear for airsoft newbies though.

We thought the EMERSONGEAR battle belt outshines its Condor contemporary because it simply fit better on our body and was far more sturdy. The padding is just right for long use and the MOLLE straps stitching on the belt was consistent (if a little tight). We couldn’t say that about the Condor Outdoor gen II tactical belts, which are serviceable but on occasion you’ll have some MOLLE webbing that’s just stitched too narrow and that can mess up your day (and reduce your attachment options).

The main downside to these battle belts is that the included tactical belt… sort of sucks. The belt buckle is made of a cheaper plastic and you can tell that the tactical belt in general won’t stand up to much abuse. The first thing you should make sure to do is swap out the included tactical belt for a Fairwin Tactical Belt (a very affordable choice).

Gear Specs
Construction:500D
Colors:Black, Coyote Brown, OD Green
Material:Nylon

PROS

  • Laser cut webbing is hyper sturdy.
  • Includes a COBRA belt buckle, considering the price this is quite the bargain.
  • Inner lining / padding is rubberized making this good for heavy equipment loads and maximum comfort.

CONS

  • While the belt buckle is fantastic you are unable to swap with any other inner belt.
  • Webbing can be very tight making the installation of some holsters very difficult.

The Condor Outdoor LCS Cobra Tactical Belt surprised us. Condor Outdoor was known for making predominately entry level tactical gear for the player. However, they really outdid themselves this tactical belt. Firstly, it includes a genuine AustriAlpin COBRA belt buckle. If you’re not sure why this is good – check out this video and come back. Know that the COBRA buckle itself usually costs just as many of the battle belts out there.

You’ll see this low profile tactical belt has laser cut webbing in replacement of the more traditional MOLLE webbing. They effectively function the same way as the normal webbing, only they’re now made of a single strip of nylon increasing the overall durability.

Overall we’re very impressed with the price to product quality ratio for this tactical belt.

Gear Specs
Construction:500D
Colors:Black, Coyote Brown, Multicam
Material:Nylon

PROS

  • Excellent build quality.
  • Included plastic stiffener makes a huge difference in comfort.
  • Side panels near pants allow for the installation of drop leg holster attachment.
  • Tough belt loops.
  • D rings for H harnesses.
  • Lifetime warranty.

CONS

  • We think the 2 rows of webbing stop this from being a default choice.
  • Does not include a tactical belt.

The HSGI High Speed Gear Slim Grip Padded Belt is a slimmer, lower profile cousin of the original padded belt. The main standpoint here is the HDPE plastic stiffener that runs along the entire length of the battle belt. This keeps the unit rigid for high levels of comfort and provide high freedom of movement no matter what kind of environment.

The general build quality coming from High Speed Gear products is outstanding. The MOLLE webbing on this particular HSGI belt are especially well made and the stitching is extremely rugged. You could, theoretically, do pull ups on this stitching it is so strong.

We ran this battle belt hard – playing at multiple MILSIM ops along the west coast. It didn’t fail us a single time.

However, there are some hang ups we’re having with the narrow MOLLE straps on this HSGI belt. it comes with only two rows of PALS webbing, which is fine if you’re utilizing something like MALICE clips (which is what their own TACO magazine pouches use), but if you use the type of pouch or holster rig that requires 3 rows of webbing to secure itself. You will need to make some compromises with this belt.

For those magazine pouches that come with their own attachment straps you’ll soon see that you can only loop in a single time (which isn’t as secure as weaving the strap between your rig and your pouch). It becomes difficult to recommend this to every since user out there especially if they have no plans of running TACO magazine pouches.

These belts do not include tactical belts, so you’ll need to supply your own.

Gear Specs
Construction:500D
Colors:Black, Coyote, Olive Drab Green, Multicam
Material:Cordura

PROS

  • Top of the line belt construction.
  • Extremely sturdy MOLLE webbing stitching.
  • Stiff liner keeps belt comfortable.
  • Slotted design allows you to weave your inner belt loops as needed.
  • Side panels near pants allow for the installation of drop leg holster attachment.
  • D rings for H harnesses.

CONS

  • Only comes with a short warranty (it comes with a 30 day limited warranty).
  • Does not include a tactical belt.

The Viking Tactics VTAC Battle Belt is a luxury choice for the player looking to have the best of the best. This is the classic battle belt design so often imitated by other airsoft gear manufacturers. This the lightest battle belt coming in at 8 ounces (not including the inner belt) and is built for high speed and low drag.

We know infantrymen who have gone on deployments to Afghanistan sing praises about this battle belt. The high density plastic insert keeps the belt rigid and comfortable. Additionally, the MOLLE webbing on this battle belt is slotted, which allows you to weave your inner belt loops so you can use standard belt specific attachment pouches or holsters.

As a whole, you can expect top quality from a Viking Tactics belt – as they make sure all their products are of top quality. This was built for hard use by real steel gunfighters and should service you well in any kind of skirmish or game you find yourself in.

Just be sure to supply your own tactical belt, because these battle belts do not come with one.

Our Choice for Best Battle Belt:

top quality airsoft war belt loadout

A part of us wants to instantly just recommend the HSGI Slim Grip Padded Belt. These are some of the top battle belts we’ve used most amongst the writers and we know that they are worth every penny.

BUT – the the narrow two rows will be a problem for users who already have pouches with integrated attachment straps. For those looking to exclusively use High Speed Gear TACO pouches (they’re really nice!), or MALICE clips, then we’d immediately recommend their battle belt as well.

We want to choose one of the war belts good enough for all players that balance function, durability, and value. They would go great with all kinds of loadouts (like our SWAT loadout for airsoft). So, with all that in mind Airsoft Core‘s top pick for general airsoft use really goes go to:

Best Overall: Condor Outdoor LCS Cobra Tactical Belts

Condor Outdoor LCS Cobra Tactical Belt 121175...

The best battle belt on this list are the Condor Outdoor LCS Cobra Tactical Belts. We are honestly quite surprised to pick a Condor Outdoor belt product over HSGI or VTAC for best battle belts. They’ve come a long way in increasing the quality of their battle belts. Here are our top reasons for why this was chosen:

  • Included authentic COBRA buckle increases the value of this belt by a significant margin.
  • Laser cut nylon webbing is far more durable than we initially thought.
  • Neoprene rubber pad keeps these battle belts comfortable for long stretches.
  • Affordable pricing especially considering it comes with a buckle.
  • Overall quality is great for MILSIM or speedsoft.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most of these airsoft battle belts do not come with inner tactical belts: do you have a recommendation?

Why, yes we do. There are three options we refer to and it depends on your budget. If you’re low on budget you’ll want to consider Fairwin Tactical Belts – which includes a COBRA belt buckle replica that is actually quite solid and fits well in battle belt loops. Even if you don’t end up wearing battle belts these are stylish enough to just wear on your everyday pants.

*If you’re planning to use this belt for real steel and heavy use, go with something of higher quality*

Our top quality recommendation if you have a higher budget are the AWS Tactical Belts. These tactical belts are pricey, but we’ve tried 5.11, Ronin, VTAC, and all sorts of different belts and this one is the stiffest and most comfortable.

Finally, if you need a belt that is somewhere in the middle then go with the 5.11 Sierra Bravo Duty Belt. It isn’t as pricey as the AWS but is a step above in quality compared to the Fairwin.

Clawgear Airsoft Battle Belt review. My configuration.

Ever wondered if there was a better way to carry all your gear in the field than by simply stuffing it in your pockets? Maybe it’s too hot to play with a plate carrier, or you don’t want to drag a pack around with you?

We feel you, which is why we’re going to talk a little bit more about battle belts.

By the time we’re through, you’re going to know the differences between a tactical belt and a battle belt, which one to use, and why you want them–as well as which are the best battle and tactical belts for your games.

Let’s get down to business!

Battle Belts vs. Tactical Belts

So, these terms can get thrown around pretty interchangeably, but they’re not actually the same thing.

Tactical belts are webbing belts that can be threaded through the belt loops of your pants and do double duty: holding your pants up and giving you a place to attach all your gear. You’ll have to thread on your pouches and holster as you put your belt on, which means that you’ll also have to remove all your gear to take the belt off.

Belt. Pants. Gun. Done.

However, these belts are super lightweight and offer you a ton of customizable carry configurations, which means they’re pretty popular with airsofters.

Battle belts, also called war belts, are a little more complex. These padded carriers are fitted with MOLLE ladders and velcro to provide you with plenty of space to comfortably carry pounds of gear.

They’re a little reminiscent of a lower back brace, but that’s because the wide base lets the belt ride comfortably around your waist or hips. Because they don’t feed through your belt loops, a battle belt can be worn over your outermost layer of clothing, making it much more accessible.

It’s worth noting that most battle belts aren’t actually belts, per se. They slot onto a web belt or a tactical belt, and that is what holds it in place.

Which Belt Do I Need?

The answer depends on your play style. Do you bring a lot of gear into the field that you need to access quickly, or do you tend to pack lighter and move faster? Do you get geared up for the day, or do you take your gear off between matches?

If you carry less gear or don’t mind staying geared up all day, a tactical belt may work just fine for you.

HSGI Battle Belt

Alternatively, if you carry lots and lots of gear, like to take your gear off between matches, or want to wear your gear over your jacket, rather than under it, a battle belt is right for you.

And now, the part you’ve all been waiting for–our recommendations!

Best Battle Belts for Airsoft

For all you pack mules and gear junkies out there, here are a few of our favorite battle belts for every budget!

Condor Gen II Battle Belt

Condor is known for affordable, quality airsoft gear, and their Gen II Battle Belt is just another great product from this brand.

Made of 100% nylon, this belt is contoured to move with your body, so it won’t get int the way as you walk, bend, kneel, or squat. It features a padded mesh lining, which keeps your gear from poking you but also keeps you cool in warmer temps.

Like we said, battle belts need a tactical belt (or similar) to stay in place. Condor’s Gen II battle belt makes it easy to thread a tactical belt through the velcro-fastened side panels. These panels also make it possible to wear a drop-leg holster attachment on either side.

There are also four D-rings mounted on the top edge, which allow you to wear an H-harness to help carry the load. With two rows of MOLLE straps, you might have a hard time getting all your gear secured, so we don’t recommend this belt for our heavy packers.

This belt is a lot thinner than some of the others on this less, so it’s less bulky, but that also means that you get less padding, and ultimately, a less durable design.

5.11 Tactical VTAC Brokos Battle Belt

This belt from 5.11 Tactical and Viking Tactics is a big step up in quality, and also a bit of a jump in price, but it is so worth it. The 5.11 Tactical VTAC Brokos Battle Belt is made from weather-resistant 500 denier nylon with an aerospace mesh lining for your comfort.

5.11 Tactical VTAC Brokos Battle Belt Kydex

It’s designed to evenly distribute weight around your waist, and uses flexible polymer inserts to help maintain its shape and prevent rolling or sagging.

With wrap-around MOLLE and 5.11 SlickStick webbing, you’ve got a ton of carry options. This also works fantastically with other 5.11 products, like their tactical belts and MOLLE pouch accessories.

All you need to do is add your belt of choice, and the slotted MOLLE attachments mean that you can even connect attachments to your belt, should you need it!

HSGI Laser Sure Grip Padded Slotted Belt

This is one of our favorites, and Rory carried one for a while. The HSGI Laser Sure Grip Padded Slotted Belt offers some really fantastic features.

Neoprene padding offers a comfy, gel-feel ride for your belt, which means no more getting poked in the kidneys by your MOLLE pouches. Unfortunately, the solid lining means that this belt can get a little warm, but if you’re playing in colder climates, you probably won’t care.

HSGI Laser Sure Grip Belt MOLLE

The laser-cut, proprietary MOLLE attachment system is made from 1000 denier Cordura laminate, which means you get less bulk, more attachment options, and–get this–it even features an additional row of slots across the back for even more space.

You can wear your tactical belt in any number of ways, thanks to the slots in the outer layer. Have a belt-mounted holster? No worries. Just weave your belt over a column or two of the attachment system and you’re good to go!

Best Tactical Belts for Airsoft

Need a tactical belt to match your battle belt? We gotchu. Here are some of our favorite tactical belts!

Condor G.I. Style Nylon Pistol Belt

Lightweight, basic, and easy to use–the Condor G.I. Style Nylon Pistol Belt is a great tactical belt for beginners.

Condor G.I. Style Nylon Pistol Belt Colors

It fastens with a single-handed squeeze buckle for easy and fast removal and is adjustable up to 44”. The belt is 2” wide, so you get a sturdy base for your gear or your battle belt.

Best Budget Tactical Belt

The nylon webbing is super durable, and this belt will hold you in good stead for your playing adventures.

BLACKHAWK! Enhanced Military Web Belt

BLACKHAWK! was created by a former Navy SEAL after his pack failed him… in the middle of a minefield. He made it out and set to work creating tactical gear designed with the needs of tactical people in mind, gear like the Enhanced Military Web Belt.

This modernized take on the classic military web belt features a number of upgrades that make this tactical belt a great choice. There’s no heavy metal hardware to weigh you down, and the nylon webbing is strong and durable.

It uses a side-release buckle for quick on and off, and is one of the top choices among military members, so you know it gets the job done. This belt comes in two sizes: Large (up to 43”) and Extra-Large (44” to 49”).

VTAC Cobra Rigger Belt

We introduced you to Viking Tactics above, but we’re pretty excited to highlight their VTAC Cobra Rigger Belt.

First off, the ingenious interlocking buckle is a breeze to get on and off, but it also doesn’t dig into you–important for when you’re appendix carrying a concealed pistol. Hey, last-ditch efforts have to be made sometimes, right

Our Favorite Tactical Belt

It’s lightweight, American-made, and super adjustable. We’d probably pick this belt again, as long as our wallets allowed it.

Buckle Up

And that’s it! Battle belts are a really useful part of your kit and do a lot of heavy lifting for you–but that also means it’s important to make sure you get one that will not only stand up to the rigors of your playing but also will keep up with you for years to come.

Do you use a battle belt to carry your gear? If so, which one? Any others you’d add to our list? Let me know in the comments–I love hearing from you. For all the latest, give Orange Tip Tactical a like on Facebook!
