A/C is Never Cold Because of Leaky Condenser

You can find these leak machines in large SUVs and trucks built on the GMT K2XX platform. This includes the 3rd generation Silverado 1500 and 11th generation Suburban.

Common Complaints About GM's HVAC Units ∞

Air conditioners only work when the systems are properly sealed to prevent refrigerent from escaping. And oh boy do these GM units have trouble keeping a proper seal.

A condensor that can't handle the pressure ∞

GM went with a condesor that is allegedly defective because it allows air to enter the system. Water vapor in that air will freeze and, as a December 2017 class-action lawsuit describes, cause backups that lead to excessive internal pressure.

"First, as air leaks into the system, water vapor in the air freezes into ice, blocking the circulation of coolant within the air conditioning system. As ice blocks the flow of coolant within the system, the fluid is forced out through the leak. Second, as coolant leaks out, the air conditioning system becomes less and less effective. When the evaporator no longer has enough coolant to absorb heat from the surrounding air, ice forms on and within the system, damaging it directly."

Parts supplier ACDelco has since discontinued this condendor, and in response GM offered additional warranty protection to some owners.

In a November 2017 mailing to owners GM said the condensors may have a condition where thermal cycling on the combination transmission fluid/oil and AC condenser cooler creates a crack that may allow refrigerant to escape. This condition consequently may deactivate the AC system.

Additional protections were offered to Chevy Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Yukon owners for 5 years / 60,000 miles (whichever happens first), while Cadillac Escalade owners were given 6 years / 72,000 miles.

Despite using the same parts, the offer was not extended to Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra owners.

Cracks in the hoses ∞

Another common breakpoint is a rubber hose connecting the compressor to the condensor. The hose is fitted to aluminum discharge tubes that are now known to flex when the vehicle is in motion. Think of it like two out-of-sync diving boards going up and down, and the rubber hose holding on for dear life.

Eventually that rubber hose will dislodge, or at the very least crack. And even the tinyest gap is enough to drain the system of the refrigent needed to turn a sweltering summer day into a tolerable one.

GM recommends hose replacements and brackets to limit flexing ∞

In October of 2014, GM informed technicians in a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB PIT5331) to replace the faulty line with a newly designed tube and to install a bracket (part #23264893) to minimize any flexing or movement.

"If the a/c line cracks, it may spray oil and refrigerant onto the a/c compressor, making the leak very hard to identify. To repair this condition and prevent it from reoccurring, replace the compressor to condenser line and install the line bracket shown below. After completing the repairs, recharge the refrigerant system and perform a leak test to verify proper operation."

Owners are required to pay for this work if the vehicle is out of warranty.

One of the plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit wonders why he was never told about the $7.00 part that could have prevented his A/C issues in the first place. Instead, he had a busted hose and a decision to make on the required expensive repairs.

[The plaintiff] says the dealer charged $154.00 for the diagnosis and quoted the repair cost at $1367.17 to use GM parts. However, the dealer allegedly said it couldn't get the parts anytime soon, but repairs could be made with non-GM certified parts for $1663.75. Choosing this route would mean a wait of three months, something the plaintiff didn't want to do in the Florida heat.

A nationwide backorder on replacement parts ∞

Because of the high volume of failures, replacement parts have been on national backorder and can sometimes take months to receive once a claim is filed.

"I have been waiting to get my air conditioner fixed now for months and I keep getting told there are no Condensers available. I have talked with service writers at GM dealership's well as other Sierra owners and they all have the same problem for the most part."

And get this ... some say the newly designed discharge hose has an aluminum part that allegedly bursts under the pressure of the A/C system. Hot damn.

For those out of warranty, the repairs can cost between $150 and $2000 to fix the issues.

Lawsuits about the HVAC systems ∞

  • February 2018 – A proposed class-action lawsuit filed in Tennessee says the AC units typically fail the first time with the 36,000-mile warranty period, but owners have to wait for months because dealers cannot get replacement parts.
  • November 2017 – A proposed class-action in Florida says GM discontinued the defective condensor after issuing TSB PIE0340, but GM won't reimburse owners who've had to pay for repairs on the previous condensors.

2014-2017 CHEVY / GM CONDENSER WIDESPREAD FAILURE OEM 23141861, 84211191

GM has reported that AC condensers on it's 2014-2017 Yukon, Pickup, Suburban, Tahoe and even some Cadillac Escalades are failing on a mass scale at the same time and in the same place.

The failure is due to a bad weld in the original unit.  If you have one of these vehicle and the AC is still working, brace yourself as you will be encountering an issue sooner than later.

Currently, GM dealerships have recalled all of their faulty inventory and will not have replacements in stock until after the summer.  Yes, that leaves thousands of people with new vehicles sweating it out this summer.

From what we have found out, the condensers are not being warranted through GM and if/when they get them in stock, they are charging a whopping $1,000 ea for them.

We did not realize this was a widespread issue until dealerships starting ordering bulk from us.

Due to this demand, we have been filling back orders to both retail and shop customers via RadiatorExpress.com

We have included an illustration of the item below and the applications it fits.  The issue with the GM weld has been corrected by a reinforced aluminum weld.

2015-2017 Chevy Tahoe A/C Does Not Work watch this FIRST before you spend MONEY!

A Bunch of Hot Air – The AC in GMC and Chevy Trucks Simply Does Not Work

CCMS HAS ENDED ITS INVESTIGATION INTO THIS ISSUE.

trucks-300x197

If you own a GMC or Chevrolet vehicle, you may have noticed that the air conditioning is not…well…working. You are not alone, as a number of consumers have complained that their GMC and Chevrolet vehicles pumped out only hot air. Owners of the following vehicles have all been subject to this hot air problem:

  • 2015 Cadillac Escalade Models
  • 2014-2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
  • 2015 Chevrolet Suburban
  • 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe
  • 2014-2015 GMC Sierra 1500
  • 2015 GMC Yukon Models

Owners of GMC, Cadillac and Chevy trucks whose AC systems are no longer cooling and have taken their vehicles to a mechanic or dealership have all been told the same thing—there is a cracked refrigerant hose leaking Freon from the compressor to the condenser. If the A/C line cracks, it could spray oil and refrigerant onto the A/C compressor, making the source of the leak hard to identify.

truck-defect-300x225

Pictured: a crack in the compressor to condenser line

As it turns out, the AC system in Escalade, Silverado, Sierra, Yukon, Suburban, and Tahoe trucks stops working and ceases blowing cold air because of a defective bracket design affecting the A/C compressor and condenser line. The refrigerant hose is the “high pressure side” hose and sees about 350 psi pressure when the A/C is running. If the hose is not properly restrained—as is the case with the affected vehicles—one of the crimped metal fittings on the hose end may eventually start leaking due to the constant flexing of the hose in that location.

Unfortunately for consumers, in order to repair this damage and the air conditioning function to their vehicles, the must replace the compressor to condenser line and then install a line bracket to properly restrain the hose. Worse yet, if hose in GMC, Chevy and Cadillac trucks cracks and is not able to transport Freon from the compressor to the condenser, both the condenser and compressor may break, too.

truck-repair-300x190

Pictured: an ideal repair of the cracked compressor to condenser line with installed bracket

After completing these repairs, consumers must then recharge the refrigerant system and perform a leak test to verify proper operation. A helpful guide for consumers can be found here. These repairs have cost consumers from $300 to $1000, just to get a working A/C unit—something they already paid for! Worse yet, many of the parts necessary to complete these repairs are currently on back-order, thereby ensuring that consumers will be stuck with this defect (and GMC/Chevrolet’s hot air) throughout the scorching summer.

Considering how much money these vehicles cost, it is inconceivable that they have such fundamental problems. If you own one of the affected vehicles—2015 Cadillac Escalade Models, 2014-2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2015 Chevrolet Suburban, 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2014-2015 GMC Sierra 1500, 2015 GMC Yukon Models—and have experienced similar issues, you should look into hiring an attorney to get back your money. For its part, the national Plaintiffs’ firm Cafferty Clobes Meriwether Sprengel LLP is investigating GMC and Chevrolet’s behavior, and would be happy to take your call to discuss any potential claims you may have.

Condenser 2015 suburban

November 30, 2017

If you notice that your vehicle's air conditioning isn't working as well as it used to, listen up. General Motors (GM) has extended the warranty coverage on some model year 2015-2017 Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon, GMC Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade, and Cadillac Escalade ESV vehicles that may experience cracked combination transmission fluid oil and AC condenser coolers. So you can potentially qualify for a free car air conditioning repair!

In a letter mailed to owners, GM notes that these vehicles may have a condition where thermal cycling on the combination transmission fluid oil and AC condenser coolers can create a crack, allowing AC refrigerant to escape and subsequently deactivating the vehicle's air conditioning system.

Extended Warranty Terms and Coverage

On the affected vehicles, the warranty for this condition is being extended to five (5) years or 60,000 miles, whichever occurs first, or six (6) years or 72,000 miles for Cadillac vehicles, whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed into service regardless of ownership.

Diagnosis or repair for other conditions is not covered under this program. Transmission fluid/oil leaks or refrigerant leaks that are caused by a collision, or damage from stone/rock impingement, road debris, etc. are not covered by this special warranty program.

This warranty extension covers air conditioning condenser refrigerant leaks at the coupler located at the upper right coupler as viewed from the front of the vehicle.

What if I already Paid for repairs?

Automotive air conditioning repairs can be pricey, so there's good news if you've paid for this repair already. GM is also offering reimbursement to owners through November 20, 2018 if they experienced this problem and paid for repairs. Courtesy transportation is available for customer whose vehicles are involved in the product program and still within the warranty coverage period.

Find Out More

Owners of model year 2015-2017 Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon, GMC Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade, and Cadillac Escalade ESV vehicles with questions or concerns about this extended warranty program to the vehicle's air conditioning system should contact their dealers or General Motors directly and reference special program 17336.
