Introduction: Troll Doll Costume

This easy troll doll costume allows you to dress up as your favorite toy from growing up, without doing any serious damage to your hair.

Whether you collected them as a kid, or want to make fun of the modern-day troll found in comment threads, this costume is quick to pull together and a nostalgic hit for any costume party.

Step 1: Hair

Let's get the trickiest part of this costume over with first: the hair. To capture the unruly nature of the troll doll's hair, I suggest buying a long, relatively plain, wig. I did some serious damage to mine, so there's no need to get anything high-end.

First, brush out any tangles in your wig. It's important to keep in mind that the longer your wig is, the bigger a challenge it will be to prop up and walk around with. I hung mine upside down, and gave it a bit of a trim. Be sure to keep some of these scraps to cover the netting later on.

Once your wig's the desired length, dunk it in some glue. Elmers is fine. The hair on your wig is plastic, so don't bother with proper hair products - glue worked better.  After you've fully saturated it, brush through again with the comb as best you can. Then hang up overnight to dry.

After the hair's dry, use your comb and tease the hair by brushing down towards the "root." This will add a lot of volume and cause a bit of "troll dandruff," but that's easy enough to shake out.

Step 2: Hair Insert and Assembly

You'll notice that the hair doesn't stand up on it's own. We need a little help for that part.

Using a strong piece of cardboard (a side from a used box is totally fine) cut out two identical petal-type shapes. See my image for reference. Measure these pieces so the arch at the base rests comfortably on the top of your head.

On the tip of one petal, and the base of the other, cut out thin strips. Slide pieces into each other, so they cross into a pope-hat-shaped piece.

You might need a friend's help when inserting the piece into the wig, as I found it worked better when on your head vs. on the table. Tie at the top with a hair tie/ribbon. The messier the better!

Once tied up, you'll see that some of the netting is visible in the back of the wig. Depending on your hair, you might just want to bobby-pin the back of the wig up. Otherwise, take some of those leftover hair clippings and glue them to the back of the wig. Because they're so short, they should stay in place.

Step 3: Jewel

While I had a very hard time finding a jewel large enough to proportional re-create the doll's belly button, I did find some jewel-esque plates.  And some shiny clear gift bags in a color that matched my wig. Perfect! If you're dressing up in costume with a group of trolls, the plate-route is an easy way to customize each of your jewels with different colors.

You'll want to get some holes in your plate, so you can easily sew it onto your leotard. After a couple failed encounters with different drills or hole-punches, I realized heat was my best option. I used a soldering iron to quickly melt 2 holes in my "jewel," one at the top, another at the bottom.

Once you have holes, it's time to add some color! Cut a bag open so it's a single layer. Then, using spray adhesive, apply a thin and even amount to the top of your jewel. Lay bag on top, and smooth out any bubbles. Repeat for a few layers. Then, using an exacto knife, cut off the edges.

Ta-da! Jewel!

Step 4: Assembly

Time to put the whole thing together!

For your body, you'll want to be covered, even though you're giving the illusion of being naked. I found some nude pantyhose that were "sheer to waist," meaning there is no change in thickness as you move up the thigh. For the leotard, I tried American Apparel, but had better luck at my local dance-supply store. I wanted a fully covering leotard with sleeves, and they had one that best-matched my skin tone and didn't show off too much skin. This is worth shopping around a bit until you find the best one.

Put on your leotard, and grab some fabric chalk. First mark where your belly button is. Then, using the chalk with the leotard still on, roughly mark where you want the top and bottom of your jewel to fall.

Take off the leotard, and place the jewel on once more. Mark the bottom and top again; you'll see there's a little bit of stretching when you put on the leotard, so be sure to account for this when sewing on the jewel. Taking a needle and thread, simply sew the two ends of your jewel onto the marked lines, leaving a little bit of slack.

And you're done! Throw the whole thing together, and go cause some troll-y mischief.

Troll doll

A Troll Doll (Danish: Gjøltrold) is a type of plastic doll with furry up-combed hair depicting a troll, also known as a Dam doll after their creator Danish woodcutter Thomas Dam. The toys are also known as good luck trolls, or gonk trolls in the United Kingdom.

The dolls were first created in 1959 and became one of the United States' biggest toy fads in the early 1960s. They became briefly popular again during the 1970s through the 1990s and were copied by several manufacturers under different names. During the 1990s, several video games and a video show were created based on troll dolls. In 2003, the Dam company restored the United States copyrights for this brand, stopping unlicensed production. In 2005, the Dam company modernized the brand under the name Trollz, but it failed in the marketplace.[1]

In 2013, the brand was bought by DreamWorks Animation,[2] with an animated feature film called Trolls being released in 2016 and a sequel released in 2020.[3][4]

Toy history[edit]

Troll dolls were created in 1959 by Danish fisherman and woodcutter Thomas Dam. Dam could not afford a Christmas gift for his young daughter Lila and carved the doll from his imagination. Other children in the Danish town of Gjøl saw the doll and wanted one.[5] Dam's company Dam Things began producing the dolls in plastic under the name Good Luck Trolls.[6] It became popular in several European countries during the early 1960s, shortly before they were introduced in the United States. They became one of the United States' biggest toy fads from the autumn of 1963 to 1965. The originals were of the highest quality, also called Dam dolls and featuring sheep wool hair and glass eyes. Their sudden popularity, along with an error in the copyright notice of Thomas Dam's original product, resulted in cheaper imitations.

A collection of troll dolls

The Dam company never stopped its production of trolls in Denmark, where they were always a popular item. In the late 1980s, the Dam trolls started making another comeback in North America. E.F.S. Marketing Associates, Inc. was one of the few corporations granted permission to import and market the Thomas Dam trolls for resale in the United States. These Dam Trolls were marketed under the trade name of Norfin Trolls, with an "Adopt A Norfin Troll" logo on the tags.

During the period of popularity in the early to mid-1990s, several attempts were made to market the troll dolls to young boys. This included action figure lines such as The Original Battle Trolls from Hasbro, the Stone Protectors franchise, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Trolls. The popular Mighty Max line also had a series named Hairy Heads, also known as Dread Heads.

In 2003, the Dam copyright was restored by the Uruguay Round Agreements Act. The Uneeda Doll Company, a company that made millions of US dollars by manufacturing troll dolls in the U.S., challenged the restoration. The US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit upheld the lower court's preliminary injunction, enjoining Uneeda from manufacturing, distributing, or selling "Wish-nik" troll dolls.[7] The Toy Industry Association named troll dolls in its Century of Toys List, a list of the 100 most memorable and most creative toys of the 20th century.[8]

In 2005, the troll brand was licensed to DIC Entertainment, and products such as fashion dolls and fashion accessories were sold under the Trollz name.[9] The new Trollz campaign was not successful. In 2007, the Danish company filed a lawsuit against DIC Entertainment claiming that the company financially misrepresented its ability to create and market a modern troll doll toy campaign and destroyed the image and goodwill of the doll.[10]

Television, film and video games[edit]

The Magic Trolls And The Troll Warriors was a 1991 cartoon special made to promote the Troll doll toys, featuring Trolls battling against King Nolaf and his Troll Warriors.[11] There was also a 30-minute DIC cartoon special in 1992 called Magical Super Trolls which featured an evil troll named Craven.[12]

A platform video game simply titled Trolls was released in 1993 for Amiga, DOS, and C64.[13] Other games were released for the NES (Trolls on Treasure Island (a modified re-release of Dudes with Attitude) and The Trolls in Crazyland (a localized version of Doki! Doki! Yūenchi: Crazy Land Daisakusen) and SNES (Super Troll Islands).

The 1990s troll doll fad also included The Trollies Radio Show, which was a direct-to-video musical with puppet trolls singing hits such as "Kokomo", "Woolly Bully", and "Do Wah Diddy", as well as some original songs.

A troll doll was featured in 1995's Toy Story and its sequel.

The 2005 DIC Entertainment range included an animated series called Trollz. The series stars five trolls who live in a magical world of ogres, gnomes and dragons, but experience everyday aspects of teenage life.

On April 11, 2013, DreamWorks Animation announced that it had acquired the intellectual property for the Trolls franchise from the Dam Family and Dam Things and become the exclusive worldwide licensor of the merchandise rights, except for Scandinavia, where Dam Things remains the licensor.[2] DreamWorks produced a 3D computer-animated musical comedy film based on the Troll dolls, Trolls, released on November 4, 2016.[14] It was directed by Mike Mitchell and co-directed by Walt Dohrn, with Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake providing the voices.[15] A sequel, Trolls World Tour, was announced in early 2017, scheduled for theatrical release on April 10, 2020 in North America. The film was originally planned to be released theatrically in the United States on this day. However, on March 17, Universal Pictures announced that the film would be released simultaneously in drive-in theaters, as regular movie theaters closed due to the restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and through Premium VOD in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, South Korea and Italy.[16][17] This affected the number of projections and the box office performance of the film. As the pandemic receded, the film was released back in regular theatres.

Vintage troll doll haul part 1

treasuretroll

Everyone has owned at least one at some point.  Troll Dolls.  They were a favorite gift item from an aunt who had no clue what you were interested in or a grandparent going on vacation and bringing back a souvenir.  Some folks collected them but for most of us it was one of those “oooh thanks” gifts that you feign interest in for a few minutes and then set on a shelf in your room that was reserved for “collectibles” IE those toys that were meant for show rather than play that you hated.  Often they wore some kind of clothes promoting a vacation spot or they were decked out in apparel that the gift giver thought you enjoyed like a baseball uniform.  The most basic of them were nude and just had the patented long colored hair as their only real play feature as they lacked any articulation at all.

So what is a Troll Doll for the uninitiated?  It’s a small plastic troll looking creature meant to be cute with big eyes, big ears, a big nose, and they are kind of chubby.  The defining characteristic has always been the long colored hair that stands straight up.  Back in the early 1990’s there was a resurgence in the popularity of those whacky and unusual Troll dolls.  I’ll be up front with you here.  I had no idea that Trolls have been in production for as long as they have been until I began researching them for this post.  Apparently these things were invented in 1959 and have been dominating the souvenir shops worldwide for decades.  Well before I was born they experienced surges in popularity in the 1960’s and the 1970’s.  Although I remember receiving and owning them before they suddenly became popular again in the 90’s I never thought much of them.  People gave them to me, I stuck them on a shelf, and that was the extent of my involvement with these strange creatures.

In late 1992 the fad began seemingly out of nowhere.  The standard nude Troll with no apparel was updated to include a small plastic faux gem where the belly button would typically be.  Marketing dubbed them “wish stones” and the story was that if you rubbed the stone on this doll and made a wish it would come true.  Big deal right?  Somehow, improbably, this small change created an explosion in popularity among these unusual figurines.  Suddenly it was imperative that everyone of any significance own a Treasure Troll overnight lest they be dubbed a social outcast.  Despite having no prior interest in these toys before I was not immune to the blitz and forced my mom to take me to the local Walgreens at 7:00 PM to buy one.  After all this was an urgent matter that needed to be addressed immediately.  Fortunately my mom either really loved me or understood how these things worked and I had a Treasure Troll in my backpack in time for school the next morning.  A couple of weeks later it was on the shelf with the rest of the “old trolls” as I played with better toys.  Although most boys moved on from the fad pretty quickly it seemed like the girls in school still used troll pencil toppers or kept these things in their desks for good luck for quite awhile.

Since Treasure Trolls were manufactured for quite awhile and were available at a low price these things can be found cheap and plentifully on the secondary market.  You can buy them boxed and sealed for around 5 bucks and loose for $1 or less.  Although I don’t personally know anyone that collects these things apparently there is a large following for them, especially in Europe, and a movie is slated for release in the not too distant future.  Sounds like an Academy Award winner.
