Greetings,

Can anyone recommend a solid DNS/DHCP appliance? I'm looking to add this to my existing infrastructure. I currently have a Cisco ASA 5510 handling the firewall and VPN, so I would need them to play nice with each other.

The easiest solution we found is from Appliansys their DNS box range can handle both DNS resolution, Auth Nameservers and DHCP we have a cluster of 6 here for one of our networks and really happy with them.

If you have a windows server you can use Microsoft's DNS/DHCP or if you want something very light just take an old PC and throw Centos (or another Linux Distro) and run DNS/DHCP.

Either way is pretty easy to setup, plenty of documentation out there on it.

The ASA should be able to do DHCP, but you can easily run this on just about any server.  What servers do you have now?  It's very simple on Windows Server, or for free, Ubuntu Server will do it easily as well.

Personally, my ASA 5505 hands out addresses for VPN clients, but clients on the network get DHCP from a Windows Server.  The ASA uses my internal DNS servers for lookups.  It all works very well.

Never heard or used them. DNS and DHCP is so easy to setup (and it comes with windows server and Linux) I never bothered to look into any type of "appliance" solution.

Just out of curiosity... why are you wanting to use something like this?

Basically, one of my higher-ups heard about them and wanted me to look into it. We currently run DHCP and DNS via Debian Linux, and I really like that solution. I want to upgrade the hardware that DHCP and DNS is running on as it is pretty old, but other than that, it's been rock solid.

We're running DNS on Centos right now.  Rock solid and passes all the penetration/security scans that Windows fails.

If you're upgrading the hardware why not virtualize and save yourself headaches on upgrades later?  That way hardware upgrades are much less intrusive.
