Design

The T-Series had a pretty conventional design and featured a cab over engine construction. The front was dominated by a massive, panoramic windscreen with the company’s badge mounted underneath it.

The front headlights were pretty small and came with a rugged rectangular shape, flanking a chunky radiator grille. The front bumper was also pretty rudimentary designed, but it coped well with the rest of the cab and was fitted with two square turning signals.

The T-Series’s cabin received wide opening doors which offered easy access inside. The doors were also fitted with a wide, deep cut glass area that gave you a top notch side visibility. All T Series trucks sit on x inch steel wheels wrapped in /75RG tires.

Interior

The Chevrolet T-Series’s interior was pretty rudimentary with a poor build quality and third class materials. The dashboard had also a pretty basic design and the overall ergonomy wasn’t exactly stellar.

The center console however, had a pretty intuitive layout and most of the controls and switches were placed within easy reach.

Perhaps it goes without saying that the cabin offered acres of leg and head room and there was a nice, airy feel inside.

The driver is also surrounded by a generous glass area which offers an excellent outward visibility. As with all external rear view mirrors these days, there is a blind spot area to consider but the separation gap between the main and wide angled lenses helps keep this factor to a minimum.

We found the dated steering wheel and the flat seats to be the most oppressive. The seats adjustments are also pretty limited and the driving position is far from being as good as other trucks in the segment. Some more lateral support could’ve been welcomed as well.

Unfortunately, the storage department was pretty poor represented, but there was a useful free area behind the seats which could’ve been used to store bigger items. There was also a convenient tray nested between the driver and passenger’s seats and some convenient overhead consoles.

The instrument panel had a basic design, but it was fitted with big, easy to read gauges for the speedometer and tachometer and other smaller indicators for fuel and oil.

Standard interior features included power defroster, tilt and telescopic steering column, 12 volt power supply and radio. On the options list you’d find air conditioning and cruise control.

Engines and transmissions

The Chevrolet T-Series was offered with liter Isuzu diesel engines which developed and hp with lb.ft and lb.ft of torque, respectively. In the T-Series range received a new series of six speed Allison transmissions and a vertical Diesel Particulate Filter available as an option.

The T and T models were offered with a standard Allison Series six speed transmission with a GCWR of lb. The was also available the Allison Series close-ratio six speed transmission with integral park pawl and GVWR/GCWR rating of 26, lb., and a Series wide-ratio six-speed transmission with integral park pawl and a GVWR/GCWR of 30, lb.

The Chevrolet T was equipped with a heavy duty Allison RDS close ratio six speed automatic transmission that was also available for the T model as an option.

Moreover, the T and T models could’ve been equipped with Allison RDS, EVS and EVS transmissions - offered in five- and six-speed versions.

The T Series range of trucks was also offered with a choice of Eaton Fuller manual gearboxes with 6, 9 or 10 speeds.

Chevrolet T-Series Engines Specifications

Ride and handling

The truck is fitted with front tapered leaf and rear multi-leaf suspensions. The ride is firm without being overly stiff, regardless of what load is carried at the back. The handling is also pretty predictable and inspires a fair amount of confidence.

The standard power assisted steering was at par with what you’d usually found in its segment and offered a good balance between road feedback and lightness.

Verdict

The old Chevrolet T-Series range of trucks was pretty rudimentary. The cabin wasn’t something to rave about either, as it came with cheap plastics and a poor build quality. The engines however, were pretty capable and were perfectly able to get the job done without whining. Though, they weren’t as efficient as today’s units.

The ride and handling departments were surprisingly good and the truck was pretty easy to maneuver around the tight city streets, despite its gargantuan proportions.

All-new GMC medium duty T-Series commercial truck

CHEVROLET AND GMC TILT CABS DELIVER MORE MODELS, MORE HORSEPOWER, NEW TRANSMISSIONS, NEW COMPONENTS AND NEW FEATURES

Popular with business owners who require a tilt cab with plenty of performance and outward visibility, the Chevrolet and GMC medium duty T-Series commercial trucks take greatness to the next level, with more models, more horsepower, new transmissions, new components and new features.

T single-axle models with 33, to 39,pound GVWR and T tandem-axle models with 53, to 56,pound GVWR have been added for The T tandem axle models are available in wheelbases ranging from to inches ( to cm) and feature a ,psi frame with L reinforcement. Also added for are T and T tractor options. These feature a inch (cm) wheelbase and inch (cm) cab-to-axle dimension.

More horsepower

Introduced as interim changes during the model year are three new horsepower and torque options for the Duramax inline-six diesel engine: horsepower ( kw) and lb.-ft. of torque ( Nm); horsepower ( kw) and lb.-ft. of torque ( Nm); and horsepower ( kw) and lb.-ft. of torque ( Nm). As a result of these enhancements, T-Series customers now can choose horsepower ratings from to ( to kw) and torque ratings from to lb.-ft. ( to Nm).

No matter which options they select, customers will benefit from unparalleled reliability in a medium duty commercial truck. The Duramax lives up to its name, offering maximum durability with a B10 rating of , miles (, km), which means 90 percent of the engines are projected to operate for nearly a half-million miles (, km) without needing a major overhaul.

New transmissions

Allison vocational transmissions also are added for A HS Series Allison transmission replaces the Series transmission as the standard transmission on T and T models in all applications. Allison and RDS are available on those models. The Allison RDS close-ratio six-speed automatic transmission is the new standard transmission on T models and is available on T and T models. Available on all T-Series models are Allison RDS, EVS and EVS transmissions offered in five- and six-speed versions. T-Series customers also may equip their vehicles with an Eaton-Fuller manual transmission available in six-, nine- or speed (8+2) configurations. (Please see the accompanying specification pages for a complete listing of engine and transmission choices.)

Additional enhancements

Chevrolet and GMC T-Series models for further benefit from a host of enhancements, including:

  • 16,pound front axle
  • /80R tires and 9-inch wheels for 16,pound rating
  • 40,pound tandem rear axle
  • Trailer wiring
  • Dealer-programmable features for the Duramax engine using the Tech 2 tool at GM medium duty dealers

Features designed to make a difference

For easier vehicle entry and exit, T-Series features wide steps, while the widest industry selection of frame and chassis components allows for installation of a broad range of vehicle bodies. T-Series also addresses an extensive range of GVW options &#; from 25, pounds to 39, pounds with single-rear axles and up to 56, pounds with the introduction of a tandem-axle model.

Available Cab to Axle (CA) length options start at 96 inches ( cm) and go all the way to inches ( cm). The standard frame is rated at 80, PSI, with a ,PSI heat-treated frame available. Both frames also have L-reinforcements available.

The convenience of a tilt cab

The Chevrolet and GMC T-Series medium duty commercial trucks offer an incredibly easy-to-maintain tilt-cab design. A single operator or technician can tilt the cab forward to reveal the entire engine compartment, meaning maintenance and repairs can be completed more quickly, saving both time and money by keeping the truck on the road.

Great visibility and maneuverability are T-Series strengths. The T-Series is a true medium duty commercial truck with the added benefits of a tilt cab design, plus the strengths and capabilities inherent in GM&#;s conventional C-Series truck offerings.

GM T-Series delivers

Offering best-in-class visibility and maneuverability, the T-Series supplements the conventional truck. While sharing many of the conventional chassis features for commonality and serviceability, the GM T-Series tilt cabs are best suited to specific applications, including operating in congested areas or where ultimate visibility and control of the vehicle are required, such as road sweepers and paint stripers.

Shorter overall length provides benefits in city operation, although body lengths up to 32 feet ( m) can be accommodated. The T-Series is built in Flint, Mich., as a domestic tilt cab entry and also is marketed by Isuzu as the F-Series.

PRODUCT HISTORY

All-new GMC medium duty T-Series commercial truck

CHEVROLET TILT CAB DELIVERS A TRUE MEDIUM DUTY COMMERCIAL TRUCK WITH BOTH BRAINS AND BRAWN

The convenient features of the new Chevrolet medium duty T-Series commercial truck run well beyond skin deep. Underneath, the reliable Duramax offers multiple horsepower and torque options with a single engine. Refinements of the frame design allow the new T-Series to accept a wide range of truck bodies.

This truck's cab, chassis design and engine are the result of GM's global partnership with Isuzu, the two working together to make all the benefits of a tilt cab available from a major medium duty manufacturer.

Additional key T-Series features include: standard Allison transmissions, improved brake systems, inch and inch wheels and tires, new 16,pound (7, kg) gross axle weight rating (GAWR) front axle, cruise control, and available traction control. And the truck's flexible specifications make it easier to meet demanding customer needs.

Best-in-class engine reliability

On the outside, the casual observer may notice little difference between the new GM T-Series and its predecessors. Underneath, however, the changes are many, including a new chassis and many common components with GM's conventional C-Series. The T-Series is powered by the Duramax Diesel with the horsepower and the torque that customers in this commercial segment demand.

With just one engine, the T-Series offers its customers a truly impressive range of horsepower and torque configurations. The Duramax can be delivered in several horsepower ratings, from bhp ( kw) to bhp ( kw), with hp (kw) versions being released in early The engine can also be slotted to deliver multiple torque outputs, from lb.-ft. ( Nm) to lb.-ft. (1, Nm), depending on customer needs.

No matter which options they select, customers will benefit from unparalleled reliability in a medium duty commercial truck. The Duramax truly lives up to its name, offering maximum durability with a B10 rating of , miles (, km), which means 90 percent of the engines produced are projected to operate nearly a half-million miles (nearly , km) each without needing a major overhaul.

"While these trucks are delivering goods around the continent, they will deliver something even more important to their owners - peace of mind," said Steve Matsil, vehicle chief engineer for GM medium duty commercial truck products.

Small improvements make a big difference

In the front, drivers will like the wider step, allowing them easier entry and exit to and from the cab. In the back, owners will applaud the frame and chassis component refinements that allow for a wide range of bodies.

The customer has more options when it comes to GVW, too. The T-Series addresses GVWs from 25, pounds (11, kg) up to 39, pounds (17, kg) with single rear axles and up to 56, pounds (25, kg) with the introduction of a tandem-axle model in January

Available Cab-to-Axle (CA) length options start at 96 inches ( cm) and go all the way up to inches ( cm).

The standard frame is rated at 80, PSI, with a ,PSI heat-treated frame available. Both frames also have L reinforcements available.

Tilt cab convenience

The Chevrolet T-Series medium duty commercial truck offers an extremely easy-to-maintain tilt cab design. Said Matsil, "A single operator or technician can tilt the cab forward to reveal the entire engine compartment." Maintenance and repairs can be completed more quickly, saving both time and money by keeping the truck on the road.

Great visibility and maneuverability are also T-Series strengths. The T-Series offers all the benefits of a tilt cab design, plus the strengths and capabilities inherent in GM's conventional C-Series truck offerings.

GM T-Series delivers

Offering best-in-class visibility and maneuverability, the T-Series supplements the conventional truck. While sharing many of the conventional chassis features for commonality and serviceability, the GM T-Series Tilt Cabs are best suited to specific applications including in congested areas or where a high degree of visibility and control over the vehicles is required - for example, road sweepers or paint stripers.

The truck's shorter overall length provides benefits in city operation, although body lengths up to 32 feet ( meters) can be accommodated. The T-Series is built in Flint, Mich., as a domestic tilt-cab entry. It is also marketed by Isuzu as the F-Series in the U.S.

"With its new Duramax engine, new frame and common components, the GM T-Series truly 'delivers the goods,'" said Matsil. "But it also delivers two things customers need - choice and reliability."
