Warner Archive’s ‘Green Lantern’ Flies to Amazon

Warner Archive Collection continues to treat fans to Blu-ray releases of popular animated television with Green Lantern: The Comlete Animated Series coming March 18. The complete 26-episode series – on Blu-ray to best display the series’ stunning CG artistry – is now available for pre-order via Amazon.

Green Lantern: The Complete Animated Series is Warner Bros. Animation’s latest take on the intergalactic missions of Hal Jordan and his comrades in the Green Lantern Corps. Beautifully rendered on a breathtaking scale, Green Lantern: The Complete Animated Series is Warner Bros. Animation’s first completely CG-animated series.

Josh Keaton leads the way as the voice of Hal Jordan/Green Lantern, alongside voice-acting stars Kevin Michael Richardson (as Kilowog), Grey DeLisle (as Aya) and Jason Spisak (as Razer). The stellar guest cast includes Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street), Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption), Wayne Knight (Seinfeld), Juliet Landau (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Kurtwood Smith (That 70s Show, Resurrection), Phil Morris (Smallville), Brian George (Seinfeld) and many more.

Executive produced by Sam Register (Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Ben 10), and Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series), Green Lantern: The Complete Animated Series is produced by Giancarlo Volpe (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) and Jim Krieg (Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox).

In addition to Blu-ray releases of Beware the Batman and the upcoming Green Lantern: The Complete Animated Series, Warner Archive Collection (WAC) has also recently distributed a DVD collection of Marine Boy, Season 2. WAC is also set to distribute The Jetsons: The Complete Third Season on DVD later this spring.

IndustryHome video

The Warner Archive Collection is a home video division for releasing classic and cult films from Warner Bros.' library.[1][2] It started as a manufactured-on-demand (MOD) DVD series by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment on March 23, 2009, with the intention of putting previously unreleased catalog films on DVD for the first time.[3] In November 2012, Warner expanded the Archive Collection to include Blu-ray releases,[4][5] Some Warner Archive releases, such as Wise Guys, previously had a pressed DVD release but have lapsed out of print and have since being re-released as part of the Warner Archive collection.

DVD-R recordable media are manufactured on-demand for the consumer and authorized distributors for online resale, rather than the traditional business model of pressing large batches of discs that ship to "brick and mortar" retailers. This saves on the costs of storing unsold stock in a warehouse and mitigates the risk of a retailer holding unsold merchandise, especially since the majority of the films in the archive do not have widespread public demand. These discs are indistinguishable in quality compared to their mass produced counterparts.[6]

In addition, Warner Archive also sells films and television shows as downloadable Windows Media files, and formerly operated a subscription-based streaming video service, Warner Archive Instant, which allowed members to stream many of the Warner Archive properties in a format similar to Netflix.[7] In 2018, Warner Archive Instant merged with its sister service FilmStruck.[8] The combined FilmStruck / Warner Archive streaming service was discontinued on November 29, 2018, and was replaced by HBO Max.[9]

Collection and operations[edit]

The collection consists of theatrical films, television shows, and television films from the libraries of Warner Bros. Pictures, Turner Entertainment Co. (including pre-May 1986 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Associated Artists Productions, RKO Radio Pictures, Brut Productions, Hanna-Barbera Productions, and pre-1991 Ruby-Spears Enterprises), HBO, Lorimar Productions, Warner Bros. Television, post-August 1946 Allied Artists Pictures, post-1946 Monogram Pictures, Largo Entertainment, New Line Cinema and Castle Rock Entertainment.

Sony Pictures (including Columbia Pictures titles), Paramount Pictures,[10][11]Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer,[12]Universal Pictures,[13]Walt Disney Studios,[14] and 20th Century Studios[15] have also started MOD services after the success of Warner Archive. Their services are named Sony Pictures Choice Collection (formerly Screen Classics By Request), MGM Limited Edition Collection, Universal Vault Series, Disney Generations Collection, and Fox Cinema Archives, respectively. Including Warner, major film studios and including Lionsgate,[16]CBS, MTV, and Nickelodeon have also started to offer MOD discs of catalog titles through Amazon CreateSpace.[14] On April 13, 2011, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment announced that Warner Archive will offer on-demand titles from Sony.[17] MGM Limited Edition titles are also sold through Warner Archive.[18] In 2013, as part of Paramount's agreement with Warner Bros., select Paramount titles were released under the Warner Archive moniker.

In November 2012, the Archive collection began releasing titles on Blu-ray, with the first two releases being Deathtrap and Gypsy.[19]

Over the years, Warner Archive's Blu-ray releases expanded to include season sets of current television series, such as iZombie, The 100, Longmire, The Originals, Lucifer, Lethal Weapon, Ballers and Final Space.

Expanding their films' availability to Internet streaming, in July 2014, Warner Archive introduced the Warner Archive Instant service. Similar to Netflix, Warner Archive Instant allows its members access to various Warner Archive library titles via their website, in addition to apps for Roku and iOS-based devices.[7] As of June 2015, the service was presently limited to serving customers who are located in the United States.

In February 2018, Warner Archive retired its online streaming service, transferring several of its films to FilmStruck.[20] It was discontinued as of November 29, 2018, and was replaced by HBO Max.[9]

Navigating the Streaming Studio System, from Amazon and Netflix to Warner Archive Instant

Viewers have more than their fair share of choices when it comes to online video content, as both Amazon and Warner Bros. have recently unveiled new streaming services to compete with on-the-rise Netflix.

Within recent weeks, Amazon launched 14 new pilots — eight comedy and six children’s — available for streaming on its Instant Video service and produced by its newly minted Amazon Studios. In a kind of democratic focus group structure, it’s up to viewers to decide what will stay and what will go.

In early April, Warner Bros. launched the controversialWarner Archive Instant, which charges customers $2 more a month than Netflix, and for less content. Though, Warner Bros. insists, the majority of their titles are exclusively drawn from their entertainment library — ranging from the silent ’20s all the way to the acid-wash ’80s — with some crossover with Netflix to be expected.

Warner Archive Instant’s aim is to provide content that customers won’t find anywhere else. Film buffs should find their obscure tastes satisfied over at the archive. Some of the juiciest titles available include Jacques Tourneur’s psychosexual cult classic “Cat People,” my personal fave Arthur Penn film, the noir-soaked “Night Moves” with Gene Hackman as a Hollywood private eye,” and Elia Kazan’s “A Face in the Crowd.” Select films are available in 1080p HD.

But is this enough to compete? Last week, Netflix fell under siege for losing nearly 2,000 titles from their streaming library due to expired licensing agreements (some of which came, natch, from Warners). Now it’s up to studios to compete with this content vacuum by developing their own verticals rather than adhere to this shopworn licensing paradigm. But it’s likely that most, realizing that bigger portals bring more eyeballs, will just make better deals at the likes of Amazon and Hulu.

Given these recent changes in the streaming landscape, Warner Bros., under the new leadership of digitally-savvy Kevin Tsujihara, may consider offering original content, not just movies, to streamers. Netflix has done well with this new model, banking $60 million with original series “House of Cards” after extensive and downright Orwellian statistical research — i.e. monitoring their customers’ every pause, play and rewind.

On the heels of Amazon Studios — read our interview with director Roy Price here — Amazon is competing well in their new turn toward serialized television. They opened up streaming of their new pilots not just to Amazon Prime subscribers ($79 a year for a wealth of content, though not more recent titles) but to anyone with an internet connection, a strategy that drew in big numbers when the pilots were made available in April. As we wrote previously, “Why not use the Flixster mobile and Facebook consumer interface to push eyeballs toward user-generated movie recommendations as well as critics’ choices?”

Warner Archive Collection: The Documentary - Warner Archive

The last film turned my life upside down also because it revealed to the world my, as it turned out, excessive sex appeal. Before I even had time to blink an eye, after the release of the film, they began to publish articles about my "impressive" merits in all adult magazines, despite the. Fact that I refused to act naked and even half-naked, they simply cut out frames from the film where on I have a minimum of clothes or where I am in the most tight dress.

Although I never filmed anywhere and did not plan to be filmed naked, everyone was just dying to see me like that.
