“Get out of that Zanja (zane-kee)! A flash flood could come and sweep you clear out into the ocean,” my mother would warn.

In her presence, of course, I would reluctantly comply. But, when she was not around, it was an enticing and exciting pathway to adventure. My friends and I would pass under streets and through tunnels winding our way through the town, fueled by imagination and a sense of danger.

My mother’s warning was always in the back of my mind, but did not weigh strongly enough to quell the opportunities for such epic exploits. One ear, however, was always cocked for the sound crashing boulders and logs pushed by sudden waves of water and impending doom.

Redlands in the 1950s was a great place to grow up. Where there are now housing tracts, there were then large expanses of orange groves. They were vast, fragrant playgrounds in which to explore and create childhood adventures.

I had the freedom to go out my back door and walk a half mile through the groves to the Brookside Market, pass no houses and cross only one street. San Mateo Street was a narrow, two-lane street lined with orange groves where I sold bags of oranges from our grove.

My dad irrigated while I sailed boats down the concrete channels. He tended to the trees and I got to sell some of the oranges and keep the money. Even as a kid, I thought that was a pretty good deal.

Where Stater Bros. stands now, at the corner of Alabama Street and Barton Road, was then the location of the Brookside Dairy. The dairy and pastures stretched all the way to San Mateo, where there was a Market Basket on the northeast corner.

My friends and I always talked of jumping the fence to ride a cow, but never quite got up the courage. The milkman from the dairy would come up our driveway in the morning, open the little door on the side of the house and put the milk bottles directly under the kitchen sink.

One morning I opened the front door to go to school, promptly closed it and went back inside.

“There’s a cow on the porch,” I told my mother.

“Don’t be silly,” she said, knowing her son was prone to such behavior. But, when she opened the door to usher me out, the cow was standing with two feet on the front steps eating bushes along the porch.

She told me to go on to school, but the cow followed me and could not be dissuaded by my mother. Mr. Hebert, my Cub Scout pack leader, happened to be driving down the street on his way to work and stopped to lend assistance. He put a rope around the cow’s neck and, with considerable effort, prevented the cow from her pursuit.

The story in the Redlands Daily Facts was, “A lamb may have followed Mary to school, but a cow … The story reappeared in the Facts many times since.

Unbelievable as it may sound today, Dr. Halberg still made house calls and tended to my brother and me in our bedrooms when we had the chicken pox and on other occasions.

Other services came directly to the house as well. Since not everyone yet had refrigerators, the ice truck made home deliveries. It was an exciting challenge to sneak over and lift the canvas flap to snatch ice chips out of the back of the truck.

The much-anticipated Helms bread truck whistle sounded the arrival of aromatic, delectable baked goods displayed in magical pull-out wooden drawers from the back of the truck.

Of course Redlands shared the same technology as the rest of the country at that time. My mother would often pick up the phone and say, “Oh, I’m sorry,” apologizing for interrupting someone on the party line. There were no cell phones, computers or video games and no TV until well into the decade, but somehow we survived and had a great deal of fun in the process.

Life seemed much simpler then. One neighborhood family did not even possess a key to their front door. They would go on vacation, leave the door unlocked and never give it a thought.

After school I could watch the Mickey Mouse Club or Sheriff John and then mother would say, “Go outside and play. Be home before dark.”

I could make it to the Brookside Market or the Olive Market in less than 10 minutes to make my selection of penny candies.

I had won a three-speed bicycle at a matinee at the Fox Theater and was free to go almost anywhere I wanted. On the weekend I could ride to the Sylvan Plunge to go swimming. It was a huge pool next to the lawn bowling courts with a giant wading pool at one end for toddlers and two diving boards at the deep end.

In my memory, the high dive was at least 100 feet high and terrifying. I climbed the ladder, looked down, down, down to the water far below and would have gone back down the ladder had it not been for the throngs of kids lined up at the bottom taunting me. I finally jumped, but never went up there again.

The stone snack bar filled with ice cream and candy was much more inviting. Swimming was also fun at Floral Plunge. It was on the corner of Texas Street and Redlands Boulevard where Tom Bell’s Jeep dealership is now. The bus would take groups of us there from school to go swimming.

Another great destination was Skateland, which was where the City Hall offices are now next to the parking structure. I would join friends there and skate all afternoon in rented skates, gliding along following the instructions of the announcer. Over the loudspeaker he would announce to skate backward, counterclockwise, etc.

When he announced, “Couples skate,” the adrenalin would start pumping in anticipation of an opportunity to skate and hold hands with a GIRL! To this day, whenever I hear organ music I can hear the melodic voice of that announcer in my head saying, “All skate. All skate.”

The YMCA was not the grand facility it is today, but there were always things to do. Margarita Orterra operated a dance school upstairs and there were many Y-sponsored activities such as a fishing competition at the fish hatchery above Mentone.

There was also a Huck Finn look-alike contest. Many kids came dressed in costume, but none could top the costume my mother created for me, which won me the grand prize of a new fishing pole and reel from nearby Pratt Bros. Sporting Goods store.

Downstairs at the Y was the great old gym with that intriguing surrounding balcony, racquetball courts, pool tables, pingpong tables and an indoor pool. Swimming in the pool was, at times, not co-ed and usually sans swim suits. It was not politically incorrect in those days and seemed perfectly natural. Times were truly different then.

Perhaps the greatest adventure of all was smudging, an occasional procedure to save the orange groves when temperatures dipped too far below freezing. It was an opportunity to stay up all night running through the groves filling flaming smudge pots and getting filthy. It was great fun.

However, in the mornings the entire town was covered with a grimy layer of nasty black crud covering cars, sidewalks and everything in sight beneath a charcoal-colored sky. Had there been environmental groups and the EPA in those days, they most certainly would have all had coronaries.

It is also doubtful they would have shared my youthful enthusiasm for the beautiful glow in the night sky to the north from the giant piles of trash being burned at the dump at the north end of town. It was a treat to go with my dad on trips to that dump because we would always stop at the little store on Texas Street for Fudgsicles.

All in all, the times were very “Happy Days” and “Leave it to Beaver.” However, there were some aspects to life then not addressed in the sitcoms. It was during the Cold War and in addition to fire drills, we rehearsed for the event of a nuclear attack in which we would close the classroom blackout curtains and duck and cover under our desks. (Yeah, that would work.)

I remember going with my parents to see fallout shelters displayed for sale. I know the family of one of my classmates on Highland Avenue had one installed, but it was supposed to be a secret.

When I was a child, however, the nuclear threat was not foremost in my mind and I knew nothing of environment issues. Life in Redlands was pretty much what any parents would want for their children.

I am grateful to have been fortunate enough to have grown up at that time, in this country and in this city.

Redlands Auto Center will be under new ownership next month when local Chevrolet and Toyota dealer Tom Bell buys the business.

In January, owner JP O’Donoghue sent out notices to 62 employees notifying them the center was closing, Bell said. Bell said it was closing because of the death last year of JP O’Donoghue Sr. and not because of the economy.

Bell plans to open the dealership under his name May 1.

“We’ve got all the papers signed, the lease signed. We’re just waiting for the manufacturer to give us the final approval,” Bell said.

Bell plans to sell the same makes now sold at the auto center. They include Chrysler, Dodge, Mazda and Jeep, he said.

Bell also intends to keep the most of the employees.

“We want to keep any employee in these stores that is productive,” Bell said. “It’s exciting because it’s got some opportunity, and it’s nice too that 62 people won’t be looking for a job, particularly as hard as the auto business is today.”

Bell said he will be reviewing the employees before May, but as long as they are productive, they will have a job under his ownership.

What Bell does intend to change is the amount of business coming to the center.

“What we’re really trying to do is keep the people who have been buying outside of Redlands for those lines of cars to get them back here with competitive prices,” Bell said.

“There are just too many people buying those products outside Redlands, and there is no reason for that.”

He plans to do that through advertising, inventory and service.

“We will be much, much more aggressive in trading policies, in our advertising and inventory and trying to have some really good selections and increase our business,” Bell said.
