mid minnesotaSon went looked at one today, runs and shifts fine 4 hdy and pto, tires solid but maybe 15% any bad things about them? We had a 2470 years back but it was kinda a dinusour

I've got a 4494, seems like a decent tractor but I'm always on edge about the powershift. If it goes, then its scrap value. Other than that they run high egt, and dont seem to pull for the size tractor - huge power loss going thru gears - on mine engine is rated 215, but only puts 175 to ground. We put a new turbo kit from Spencer Diesel in ours and it made it a pretty good puller, and lugs really well. I THINK the 90 series is still shifted by linkages, and there is adjustment that makes the powershift engage better or worse. The 94 series is electric shift -- but I think the control boards are spendy if they go out. Check crab steer and condition of knuckles and all pivot points. I think the axles are a standard Eaton setup, so they're rebuildable. I think other replys will say theyre one to stay away from, I've had mine 6 years and only fixes have been improvements to general condition of tractor, not because it was "broke". I don't know that any 4wd of that era is really "good" but they work, seems like they're all one breakdown from scrap. Remember not to leave powershift in R while doing stationary pto work. I think the 90 series had electronic crab steer like my 94 -- check to make sure the back wheels dont shake back and forth, this means there's either a dead spot in the sensor on wheel, or the control box has issues. I had my box rebuilt a couple years back and it was 5-600, but they cant get parts for some of them any more. 504 engine is pretty good.

North Central Iowa

I have a 4690 that I've had for 12 years.  I use it for spring and fall field work and on the grain cart.  It isn't a power house, but it does what I need and has been reliable.  My tractor has 20.8-34 tires dualled up all around and the tires that were on it were in pretty bad shape when I got it.  I looked all over for options and the biggest problem was even if I was willing to spend the money on 8 new ones (I wasn't), coming up with 8 matched tires that size was almost impossible because it's just not a common size.  I ended up finding a 2670 that somebody replaced the tires on, bought it, swapped my junk tires over, and sold it.  Really was a case of getting lucky and being in the right place.  Like the other poster said, they're as good or better than the other options from that time period, the power shift transmissions are a known weakness, but if you take care of it, I think you'll be ok.  Any 4wd from that era is one major failure away from scrap if you can't do the repairs yourself because sending it into the dealership for anything big is going to cost more than buying another one.

Good luck,

Mike

EC North DakotaWe had a 4890 for 25 years and never had a bit of trouble. It pulled great.

Steering position sensors and knuckles are about the only thing different to look closely at.

Greene Co. ArkansasI have a 4490 its been a good tractor.

N.W. OhioHad a 2670 for years. I grew up with one. The major problem with them is all the unviversals due to all 4 wheels turning. Seemed like always 1 of them needed attention.

It was always good cheap horse power. It was our back up tractor and it got us out of a lot of situations when another broke. It would always fire up and run great. Could never get all the oil to stop leaking was the worst part.

When I was about 14 my father and I re-did a powershift on it. That sucked. I remember when he blew it cause he sunk a big ole 13 shank 3pt v digger into hard clay and that
tractor hopped a couple times and there she went. remember it like yesterday. Then as we slide the motor back in we broke the rings going in and had to pull the motor all over again because it wouldn't move.

I honestly was happy to see it leave. We sold it and got a IH 4366 and love that tractor a lot more.

Ea. WashingtonThe main thing with those is " Don't throw in the clutch while puling a heavy load and let the tractor stop dead." Each gear has a heavy clutch plate spinning on a hollow tube and turning at engine speed but hooked solid to the output. When the tractor has to stop suddenly the clutch plates also have to stop. Going from full speed to dead stop will twist off the hollow tubes and sure enough the transmission goes out.

Operator understanding of how it works will do wonders on the life of the tractor. Other than that there not to bad a machine. Throttle it down before stopping.

Benson, MNIf you buy it, I'll sell you the service manual that I have for it. Trust me you'll need it. The one I had we worked on everything other than the tranny.
Axle seal leakage
Electrical gremlins in the steering controls (remember that these tractors don't articulate in the middle the axles steer)
504 engine is about maxed out, I believe the turbo is running about 25# of boost and was always rolling coal and had a tendancy to run warm.
Factory lights are sub par.

I bought one cheap, and it turned into the most expensive tractor I ever owned. They have their place, but if your looking for a tractor that you plan on pulling fairly hard, I would pass.

mid minnesotaScott I sent you an email about the service manual , May need it since we bought it today thanks

When we entered the hostel, I deliberately held the elevator, and then pressed the button for the fifth floor, where the girls lived. And not the eighth, where we lived. I kept pretending to be a teenager who was having fun.

Now discussing:

Was a secret lesbian, it was Masha herself. Here Masha sits cross-legged, and Anya spread them like a man. But AI is just like a man snorts, wipes himself, shakes his huge boobs, put her foot on the shelf and all of her household in Masha's. Face right now, wow.
