Breaking down Cadillac’s New Headlamp Design
LED, bi-functional HID projectors add functionality and aggressive look
DETROIT – A deep look into the next generation of Cadillac models reveals new approaches to how designers are streamlining the form and function of headlamps, what designers call the “eyes” of a car.
The upcoming all-new 2014 Cadillac CTS luxury sport sedan combines light-emitting diode and high intensity discharge lights to create a sleeker new “face” for Cadillac, befitting the new sedan’s distinction of being the lightest car in its class.
The CTS sedan features 16 indirect fire LED lights on each headlamp with eight LEDs beginning on the fender of the car and an additional eight LEDs continuing down the front bumper. The eight LED lights on the front bumper also double as a turn indicator, helping eliminate additional lights and keeping a clean aesthetic.
Together these LEDs function as day-time running lights, enabling a safety feature to add an element of drama to the front of the car.
The main headlights, called projectors, are also multi-purpose. A single HID element acts as both low and high beams. Active Forward Lighting helps drivers see more clearly through corners by turning with steering direction.
“The CTS is the first Cadillac to combine DRL and turn signal under the same lens,” said Brian Smith, CTS exterior design manager. “Giving the HID projectors a dual purpose allowed us to shorten the front headlamps and give the CTS the most dramatic signature lighting of any Cadillac to date.”
Introduced at the recent New York International Auto Show, the all-new CTS ascends to the heart of the midsize luxury market with expanded performance, elevated luxury and sophisticated technology. The third-generation CTS adopts engineering and design solutions from the award-winning architecture of the ATS sport sedan and will be the segment’s lightest car. Production of the CTS begins this fall in Lansing, Mich.
Cadillac has been a leading luxury auto brand since 1902. In recent years, Cadillac has engineered a historic renaissance led by artful engineering and advanced technology. More information on Cadillac can be found at media.cadillac.com.

DOE/SAE Compliance - FMVSS 108
Auto parts manufacturers must adhere to a strict set of guidelines in order to meet the criteria laid out by FMVSS 108. Any lights or reflectors that adorn vehicles traveling on public roads MUST adhere to the regulations; otherwise, the manufacturer is subject to a slew of penalties.
Some of the FMVSS 108 guidelines include:
- Technical specifications (illumination, construction)
- Proper product marking
- Manufacturer registration
While the regulations are designed primarily for manufacturers, consumers must always be sure that any lights that they install on their vehicles also meet these regulations. Citations can be issued for products that do not meet the minimum regulatory requirements.
All of the parts carried on Go-Parts.com are FMVSS 108 compliant, as the designs have endured extensive testing. Our manufacturers only produce replacement lights that meet the highest of industry standards, ensuring on-road safety and reducing the probability of breakdowns in component construction.

While driving heard clanking under the car for about 2 blocks then stoped. Took it to the dealer and found out 2 bolts had backed out of the drive shaft and one had sheared. Had the exact same problem with a 2011 Cts. I had purchased a warranty when I bought the car in 2018, car was repaired. I did notify Cadillac. Right front headlight has moisture. Understand Cadillac used inferior seals previously. Will need to replace. Light cost approximately $250. 00.

3 Headlights problem of the 2012 Cadillac CTS
Failure Date: 03/02/2019
Both headlights on the vehicle have had to be replaced very recently (spring/summer) following a cold and harsh winter. We believe that the problem identified with the srx models extends to the Cts and perhaps other Cadillac models given the number on the street with a single headlight; however, Cadillac has denied our claim. The cost of repair of both headlights exceeded $600.
4 Headlights problem of the 2018 Cadillac CTS
Failure Date: 01/17/2019
The Cadillac daytime running lights and headlights exceed american medical association eye safety requirements of 3000k color temperature or less. The Cadillac lights are damaging the eyes of drivers of oncoming vehicles and of pedestrians. The glare caused by the Cadillac lights prevent drivers of oncoming vehicles from properly assessing road conditions and surroundings.

5 Headlights problem of the 2011 Cadillac CTS
Failure Date: 11/11/2018
I purchased a new 2011 Cadillac Cts4 in August 2012 from herb chambers Cadillac in lynnfield MA. Since that time, I have driven the car approximately 60,000 miles. This problem affects virtually all (tens of thousands!) Cadillac Cts and srx vehicles built since 2008. After driving the car for a few months, I noticed that condensation appeared in the headlight assemblies after driving in or parking in the rain. The condensation would naturally evaporate during evaporate after the rain stopped. Over time, the low beams became dimmer and dimmer. They have become so dim that driving in other than well-lit areas is dangerous. I contacted the mike anagnos, service manager at herb chambers Cadillac. I presented the problem to him. Without inspecting the car, he stated that this was a common problem and that the headlights and headlight wiring harness needed to be replaced. He stated the replacement of two headlights cost would be $1400. 00. He explained that the problem was caused by water ingress to the headlight assembly causing the headlight connectors to corrode and 'melt'. He offered no further explanation as to why two headlights would cost approximately 10% of the car's bluebook value. I asked him if the corroded wiring that melted presented a fire hazard. He did not reply. I believe that this presents a risk of under-hood fire. If you do an internet search on Cts or srx dim headlights, you will find hundreds of complaints about this problem and the outrageous cost to repair. See also Cadillacforum. Com and justanswers. Com my research indicated that when Cadillac repairs these vehicles, they use the same parts that were used when the car was built. . . Virtually guaranteeing that the problem will present itself again. This car is a danger to drive at night and a fire risk from the 'melted' wiring harness.

6 Headlights problem of the 2011 Cadillac CTS
Failure Date: 06/01/2018
Headlights dimming over time. Car is barely drivable at night. Dealer says I need to replace headlights and wiring harness. Stated that wiring harness was likely melted. I estimate that headlights will be at total failure by 12/31. 18. Dealer wants $1200+ to replace headlights and defective wiring harness. Cadillac refuses warranty support. At least two class action complaints have been filed in usdc. Fire risk! fire risk! fire risk!.

10 Headlights problem of the 2008 Cadillac CTS
Failure Date: 10/10/2015
The problem started with the timing chain, which led to coil issues and catalytic converters issues which led to low head beams constantly burning out. Everytime work is done it causes a chain reaction to other parts in the car that requires more and more money. Now the engine light is still on and I am told that since the first catalytic converter was repaired, the second one now needs replacing and the low head beam on the passenger side has wiring issues that will not allow the new bulb to burn, I am told that the wiring appears to be spliced. The catalytic converter was replaced in April and so was the low beam bulb. Headlight was replaced in April, 2015 it is not working today and was told by dealership that the wiring had been spliced or burned out. Radio speakers do not work and all was centered around issues with coils and catalytic coverters.

17 Headlights problem of the 2003 Cadillac CTS
Failure Date: 01/01/2008
Headlight cover on Cadillac Cts 2003 develops cracking and spider webs, such that visibility is diminished. I have noticed this on all older Cts vehicles in the phoenix area. It may be due to the sun. However, this problem does not appear on other older vehicle headlamps. The dealer will not repair despite extended warranty. Repair can only be done via replacement on the entire headlamp assembly which costs in excess of $1,300 plus labor by a gm dealer.
18 Headlights problem of the 2003 Cadillac CTS
Failure Date: 04/24/2007
Low beams on the headlights has a black bar in my line of vision. Creates a "blind" spot and makes night driving on the country roads near my home dangerous. It also creates an area of darkness that doesn't light up stop signs or intersections along these roads . I feel this should be something that has to be corrected!! I drive along these roadways while it is dark twice a day 4 times a week on my way to and from work. I would feel more comfortable if my entire line of vision was lit up. Thankfully I have the use of the high beams that do not have this dark bar.

22 Headlights problem of the 2003 Cadillac CTS
Failure Date: 04/15/2004
Hid headlights s. U. C. K. , in almost all instances where I have had the misforune of having a vehicle so equiped coming at me I have had to shield my eyes because of the glare and eye strain. Knowing that dot and associated agencies seem to have a regulation for everything automotive. I thought maybe a useful regulation could be enacted regarding these safety hazards that the "big 3" are trying to pass off as headlights. I am now living in europe and here headlights don't glare drivers like us spec lights do. Why does the rest of the world have real headlighs and in the us we have to have these poorly aimed "flood lights". Current us headlights are in serious need of a new standard that matches the rest of the world. That way I, and the rest of the motoring public, won't have to drive with sunglasses on at night.

26 Headlights problem of the 2003 Cadillac CTS
Failure Date: 10/15/2002
(corrected complaint) headlight low beam on the Cadillac Cts 2003 has a black bar that reduces vision to about 75 feet and on dark country roads, this shortened vision is extremely dangerous. The headlight should be a recall before serious accidents occur as a result of this condition. What was Cadillac thinking? Cadillac doesn't seem to think there is a problem but obviously they don't ever drive their product on dark roads at night. This headlight problem needs to be corrected!! it is awful!.

29 Headlights problem of the 2003 Cadillac CTS
A black bar appears about 75 feet in front of the car with the low beams on. This is particularly noticeable when driving along narrow country roads in the area in which I live. I feel that this is an unsafe design and have reported it as such to Cadillac but the company doesn't see anything wrong with a low beam system that has a built in blind area in the projected beam in the drivers line of sight. Request you investigate this safety complaint please. Dt.
