AS5270 Magnetic Angular Position Sensor

AS5270

The AS5270 is a dual-die, high-resolution angular position sensor for precise absolute angle measurement. The AS5270 is available with an analog output interface (AS5270A) or a digital output interface (AS5270B). The latter can be programmed as a PWM or a SENT-compliant output interface.

Based on a Hall sensor technology, this device measures the orthogonal component of the flux density (Bz) over a full turn rotation and compensates for external stray magnetic fields with a robust architecture based on a 14-bit sensor array and analog front-end (AFE). A sub-range can be programmed to achieve the best resolution for the application. To measure the angle, only a simple two-pole magnet rotating over the center of the package is required. The magnet may be placed above or below the device. The absolute angle measurement provides an instant indication of the magnet’s angular position. The AS5270 operates at a supply voltage of 5V, and the supply and output pins are protected against overvoltage up to +20V. In addition the supply pins are protected against reverse polarity up to -20V.

The AS5270A is a stacked dual-chip for high-reliability redundant operation. In this device, two chips are aligned and encapsulated in the same package. Separate pins are provided for each chip, so no electrical fault in the device can affect both chips.

An input pin (DIR) selects the polarity of the output with regard to rotation direction. If DIR is connected to ground, the output value increases with clockwise rotation. If DIR is connected to VDD, the output value increases with counterclockwise rotation. The AS5600L is available in a standard SOIC-8 package and in a WL-CSP for applications requiring small-sized sensing solution with a size of 2.07mm x 2.63mm x 0.6mm. Both variants are qualified for a temperature range from -40°C to 125°C.

Magnet encoders

Note that this almost surely needs to be a diametrically-magnetized magnet, not a standard axially-magnetized magnet! I can’t find in the datasheet anywhere that calls out using a diametrically-magnetized magnet, but it does state that “The AS5047P uses 4 integrated Hall sensors which produce a voltage proportional to the orthogonal component of the magnetic field to the die”. If a magnet is axially magnetized, the orthogonal magnetic field component will be near constant, and the sensor wouldn’t work well.

kjmagnetics is where I buy most of my magnets, and has a wide variety of diametrically magnetized magnets, including ones similar to the 8mm⌀ and 3mm height N35H magnets used to characterize the sensor in the datasheet. Since they sell in low quantity, their prices are very reasonable, and I’ve never had an issue with them or their magnets, I’d recommend using them.

Edit: the devboard does include this diametrically-magnetized magnet, which confirms my suspicions.
