3.0 out of 5 starsability to merge internal and SD storage please
Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2018
Works on my Verizon post-paid line. Not sure why others are having issues, could be incompatible with pre-paid lines but Amazon should still clarify.
Anyways, so far its been a good phone. Its quick enough for me, but if you play a lot of 3D games you probably will want something with a better SoC. The Snapdragon 425 in the K30 uses Adreno 306 GPU (according to CPU-Z) works fine for 2D apps and games that most people use.
Doesn't seem to support adoptable SD storage so even if you do want to play 3D games you'll be limited on how many you can have installed at any one time by the ~8gb of free space on the internal storage. This limited internal memory for apps and games with no way to expand it is the reason I decided to give 3/5 stars. Worrying about internal storage space is a pain that makes the whole phone worse.
**edit 7/7/18** I found a workaround/hack to partition the SD card to be partially seen as internal storage. Helps some but not completely as some apps will not install to internal SD card partition. Picture illustrates this; the 32 GB SD card has been partitioned into 22GB internal (intSD), and 8GB external (seen as normal removable storage)
Serviceable camera, it takes pictures quickly and LG's camera app is surprisingly tolerable and worth using for the speed it offers. The pictures it produces are the worst aspect of the camera experience. they appear low resolution despite the 8mp sensor and LGs processing algorithims excessively oversharpen a few random edges per shot. This is my experience with LG phones in the past, having decent or even fantastic hardware let down by terrible post processing. That's for well lit outdoor shots. Indoors you can take pictures. Generally you can tell what they are of, but there is a lot of noise in most shots.
"Amazon Prime" discount doesn't seem to come with many downsides I can tell. there are some preinstalled apps and they cannot be uninstalled completely (system apps they are), but they don't seem to intrude. no lockscreen ads, amazon appstore not even installed.
screen is nice. only 720p, but otherwise not a bad panel.
fingerprint reader is faster and more accurate than my iPhone 6+ was. Placement on the back takes a bit to get used to.
speaker is terrible. Fine for alarms, but anything else it is tinny and distorts at moderate volume.
Edit 7/25/10: I also wanted to add that it does come with the fantastic LG classic; "Accapella Goodmorning" alarm tone. 10/10 alarm clock experience.

The LG K30 is the latest budget phone to join Amazon's Prime Exclusive phones
TL;DR
- You can now pick up the LG K30 from Amazon as a Prime Exclusive phone.
- The K30 was the first budget phone to support T-Mobile’s new band 71, which allows for better rural coverage.
- The Prime Exclusive K30 works on T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon.
Announced earlier this month as a low-cost option for T-Mobile customers, the LG K30 is now available at an even lower price for Amazon Prime subscribers.
As a refresher, the phone features a 5.3-inch display with 1,280 x 720 resolution, 13MP primary camera, 5MP selfie camera, Snapdragon 425 processor, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of expandable storage. The K30 also includes a 3,000mAh battery, rear fingerprint sensor, headphone jack, and Android 7.1 Nougat out of the box.
The real story with the K30 is with its support for the 600MHz spectrum, otherwise known as band 71 on T-Mobile. Previously used to transmit television signals, band 71 was barely used anymore before T-Mobile bought it and other spectrum during a government auction last year for almost $8 billion.
$8 billion is a cool amount to spend on spectrum, but band 71 allows T-Mobile to better compete against AT&T and Verizon in rural areas. Band 71 also allows for better signals in buildings, though the focus is on additional rural coverage.
Is Amazon Prime worth it at $119 a year?
There are certain pockets around the U.S. that can access band 71 right now, but a full build-out will not happen until July 2020. Even so, T-Mobile’s merger with Sprint means that timeline gets thrown out the window, so we must wait and see how quickly T-Mobile will build out band 71.
Still, the K30 is the only budget smartphone so far to offer support for band 71. Most devices that support the spectrum are flagship devices like the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus.
For now, you can pick up the unlocked K30 at the link below for $140. We do not know if the unlocked version includes support for band 71, though the phone works on T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon.

Design
The device is protected with extra seals to prevent failures caused by dust, raindrops, and water splashes.
We consider a lower weight better because lighter devices are more comfortable to carry. A lower weight is also an advantage for home appliances, as it makes transportation easier, and for many other types of products.
We consider a thinner chassis better because it makes the product more compact and portable. Thinness is a feature highlighted by many manufacturers of mobile devices, but it is essential for a wide range of products.
The width represents the horizontal dimension of the product. We consider a smaller width better because it assures easy maneuverability.
The height represents the vertical dimension of the product. We consider a smaller height better because it assures easy maneuverability.
Display
Pixel density is a measurement of a screen's resolution, expressed as the number of pixels per inch (PPI) on the screen. A higher pixel density translates into more clarity and sharpness for the images rendered on the screen, thus improving the quality of the viewing experience.
The bigger the screen size is, the better the user experience.
Damage-resistant glass (such as Corning Gorilla Glass or Asahi Dragontrail Glass) is thin, lightweight, and can withstand high levels of force.
IPS (In-Plane Switching) is a technology used for LCDs. It was designed to overcome the main limitations of conventional twisted nematic TFT displays: limited viewing angles and low-quality color reproduction. PLS (Plane-to-Line Switching) is a type of IPS screen developed by Samsung, with increased brightness and lower production costs.
OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) displays are formed of organic materials that emit light. They have higher contrast ratios and wider viewing angles compared to LCDs. AMOLED and POLED are types of OLED displays.
You can operate the device easily, by pressing the screen with your fingers.
The user can see information such as date, time, and notifications even when the screen is off. The functionality can be enabled or disabled.
Sapphire crystal glass is an extremely durable material, which is surpassed only by diamond in terms of hardness. A sapphire crystal display is stronger and more scratch resistant than toughened glass such as Corning Gorilla Glass.
Devices using Force Touch or 3D Touch technology respond to the user's taps and presses with haptic feedback, and allow users to perform various actions depending on the force of the input.
Performance
Random-access memory (RAM) is a form of volatile memory used to store working data and machine code currently in use. It is a quick-access, temporary virtual storage that can be read and changed in any order, thus enabling fast data processing.
The CPU speed indicates how many processing cycles per second can be executed by a CPU, considering all of its cores (processing units). It is calculated by adding the clock rates of each core or, in the case of multi-core processors employing different microarchitectures, of each group of cores.
The device has a standard memory slot (such as an SD or micro SD card slot) that enables you to extend the built-in internal storage with affordable memory modules, or easily retrieve data, such as photographs, from the memory card.
The internal storage refers to the built-in storage space available in a device for system data, apps, and user-generated data. With a large amount of internal storage, you can save more files and apps on your device.
Small semiconductors provide better performance and reduced power consumption. Chipsets with a higher number of transistors, semiconductor components of electronic devices, offer more computational power. A small form factor allows more transistors to fit on a chip, therefore increasing its performance.
A 32-bit operating system can only support up to 4GB of RAM. 64-bit allows more than 4GB, giving increased performance. It also allows you to run 64-bit apps.
Cameras
The number of megapixels determines the resolution of the images captured with the main camera. A higher megapixel count means that the camera is capable of capturing more details. However, the megapixel count is not the only important element determining the quality of an image.
Optical image stabilization uses gyroscopic sensors to detect the vibrations of the camera. The lens adjusts the optical path accordingly, ensuring that any type of motion blur is corrected before the sensor captures the image.
A dual-tone flash has LED lights with different color temperatures, delivering a better color balance to photos and videos.
A BSI (backside illuminated) sensor is a camera image sensor which captures better quality images in poor lighting conditions, and offers better overall sharpness and image quality.
Slow-motion is an artistic video effect that makes time seem to go slower. It is achieved by recording a video at a higher frame-rate than the standard playback rate of 24fps or 30fps. Depending on camera capabilities, frame rates for slow-motion videos vary between 60fps and 960fps.
It can automatically shoot pictures with a higher dynamic range (HDR).
A flash is good for low-light environments, and can sometimes be used as flashlight.
Audio
Devices with stereo speakers deliver sound from independent channels on both left and right sides, creating a richer sound and a better experience.
A built-in FM radio tuner allows you to listen to most of the live-broadcasted FM radio stations without using the internet.
Phones with physical keyboards have dedicated media keys, such as: play, stop, next, previous, volume up/down, etc.
Battery
Battery power, or battery capacity, represents the amount of electrical energy that a battery can store. More battery power can be an indication of longer battery life.
The manufacturer offers a branded wireless charging kit. To charge the device, you simply put it down on its charging base.
Fast charging technologies, like Qualcomm’s Quick Charge or MediaTek’s Pump Express, are used to reduce the time it takes to charge a device. For example, with Quick Charge 3.0, the battery can be charged to 50% in just 30 minutes.
The ultra power-saving mode, also called low power mode, is an effective way to extend the battery life of the device. Usually, it involves limiting screen brightness and contrast, disabling location services, restricting connectivity, and turning off nonessential apps.
Features
The download speed is a measurement of the internet connection bandwidth, representing the maximum data transfer rate at which a device can access online content.
NFC (near-field communication) allows a device to perform simple wireless transactions, such as mobile payments. Note: this feature may not be available in all markets.
802.11ac wireless works on the 5GHz frequency range. It offers higher transfer rates, improved reliability, and improved power consumption. It provides advantages for gaming and HD video streaming.
All DLNA-certified products are compatible with one another. When different devices are connected to the same network, data can be transferred easily between them.
Bluetooth is a wireless technology standard that allows data transfers between devices placed in close proximity, using short-wavelength, ultra-high frequency radio waves. Newer versions provide faster data transfers.
The fifth-generation wireless technology delivers higher speeds and lower latency than the previous, fourth-generation tech.
The upload speed is a measurement of the internet connection bandwidth, representing the maximum data transfer rate at which a device can send information to a server or another device.
