Getting your unemployment benefits on the ReliaCard

Many states offer the choice of receiving unemployment benefits on the U.S. BankReliaCard.1The COVID pandemic has caused a surge in unemployment claims and a sharp increase in requests for this card.

To help you find information about using the ReliaCard for unemployment benefits, we’ve pulled together this FAQ list. For more general questions, visit our general ReliaCard FAQ page. 

ReliaCard unemployment debit card FAQs

Once your state unemployment agency approves your claim, they will contact us and we’ll mail your card within two business days. You should receive it within 10 business days.

You can check the status of your card any time by visiting our card status tracker. It’s available for all of our unemployment programs except for Arkansas unemployment. For information on unemployment claim processing or other government benefit payments, check with your state unemployment agency.

You can activate your card on the ReliaCard website or the mobile app.

To activate your card via the ReliaCard website, choose Activate Card.

To activate via the mobile app, visit the App Store or Google Play to download the mobile app. Then choose Setup Online Access/Activate New Card.

In some cases, you may receive your ReliaCard before the funds are loaded to the card. Your card will be funded two to three business days after your state unemployment agency has approved your claim. You can monitor the status of your claim and payments by checking your state’s website.

Enroll in Alerts to be notified via text or email when a deposit has been received. Find more information in the How can I keep track of the availability of funds and other activity on my account question.

There are several ways.

  • You can make purchases anywhere Visa® and Mastercard® debit cards are accepted.
  • Some merchants will allow you to get cash back when using your card to make a purchase.
  • You can withdraw cash from ATMs. Check the ReliaCard mobile app or usbankreliacard.com for a list of surcharge-free ATMs.

We placed a fraud block on your account for your protection. There are two ways to remove it.

Use your mobile device to have the block removed within one to two business days.

  1. Log in to verify.usbank.com/id.
  2. Upload a picture of your government-issued ID and a selfie.

Use the cardholder website to have the block removed within five business days.

  1. Log in.
  2. Select Document upload under Quick Links.
  3. Select Account restriction – need additional information.
  4. Select Begin.
  5. Upload all the required documents listed in the instructions.

It may still be blocked because we couldn’t read your upload or perhaps you didn’t submit all the required information. We know this is frustrating, but please try again.

The best way to monitor activity on your ReliaCard is to sign up for email or text alerts.2 You’ll receive alerts about low balances, funds added to your account, transactions and more.

To sign up via the cardholder website or the mobile app, follow the prompts when you activate your card.

You can also text the following to

  • Text “BAL” for your balance.
  • Text “TRANS” for recent transactions.
  • Text “HELP” for customer service.

Yes. Follow these steps:

  1. Log in to usbankreliacard.com. 
  2. Go to the top navigation bar and choose Manage money.
  3. Choose Pay bills.
  4. Select the company (the payee) you want to pay from the payee list. If you can’t find them, you can manually enter their name by selecting Add a payee.
  5. Enter the amount you want to pay and select the payment date.
  6. Select the Review and pay button.

Schedule your mortgage or rent payment at least five business days before the due date. Find more information after signing in to your account in Bill Pay Terms and Conditions.

You don’t need a PIN for signature-based purchases if you choose Credit when making the purchase. However, you do need one for debit card purchases and cash withdrawals at ATMs.

You’ll choose your four-digit PIN when you activate your card. 

Call the number on the back of your ReliaCard and reset your PIN using the automated system. Your card may be locked after too many attempts using the wrong PIN.

If your program allows you to transfer funds to another account, your funds will leave your account immediately. It will take approximately three to five days for the funds to be available in the other account.

No, it does not. The issuing agency is the only source that can load funds to your ReliaCard.

Follow the steps below:

  1. Call
  2. If the system doesn't recognize your phone number, it will prompt you to enter the phone number associated with your card.
  3. Enter the last four digits of the card you wish to replace.
  4. Choose the reason for replacement:
    • Select 1 to replace a lost card.
    • Select 2 to replace a stolen card.
    • Select 3 to replace a damaged card.
    • Select 4 to update your name.
    • Select 5 to order a replacement card.

If you don’t have all the required information, you can select an option to talk to a customer service representative for help.

Your identity may have been stolen and used to file a fraudulent unemployment claim. The state unemployment agency will help you close the claim and ensure your tax information is correct.

Call the state unemployment agency to report a fraudulent claim. Follow their instructions for reporting the invalid G form.

Easy & Everything needed.

I got this card with my PUA unemployment. I didn’t expect to truly love the card, the app and everything that goes with it. I’m a mom, and I need something that it is easy, but also secure. I don’t want to have to worry breach of data but I also don’t want some thing that is so mind-boggling hard it’s just too much. I get a text whenever the card is used. I get a text whenever there’s a deposit. I get a text with my balance. These notifications were chosen by me. I can change my notification preferences, topics or turn text notifications off all together. I love this. I can deposit or withdraw money at thousands of different locations without a fee. This is awesome. I can choose to get a paper statement or not, no hidden fees either way. When it is all said and doneI will continue with this card. When there is no more PUA or unemployment, I will continue to keep this card. Every debit card I’ve ever seen/used has fees attached. The big fee If you use an ATM at a financial institution that is different from the financial institution that issued the card. NOT THIS CARD THOUGH!! Absolutely Awesome!!!

Easy to use

The app is very user friendly and easy to use. However the card never works therefore I am only able to use my money when I transfer it to another account at my expense. When I called customer service to find a way to be able to use my card they told me there was nothing they could do for me. And that I should just transfer the money out…once again at my expense and no offer to credit the transfer fee back to me. I was not ok with that and asked for a manager. The manager was very hostile from the moment she got on the line. She did not help me at all. I am still not able to use my card without it declining and I have to transfer money out to be able to use it and I have to pay the fee every time. I have a debit card but I’m not able to use it. USBank has made it abundantly clear that there is nothing they can do for me. A little ridiculous if you ask me. But the app is easy to use…lol!

Money is missing

This card and app make it so easy for hackers and identity thieves, especially ones you think are your friends, to hijack your account and steal funds. When I call the number on the back, it’s not for pandemic unemployment, so they don’t want to help me, when I call the number this app tells me to call, and it does every time I try to log on because someone keeps taking off my security questions and password, I feel like I’m not even talking to a ReliaCard employee. I’ve done everything I could. I called the police who talked in circles until they finally convinced me there’s nothing they can do, I’ve called customer service, I’ve called the merchants where the bogus transactions take place, and I never get any money put back in my account. And from the very get go. I have chosen the option for my funds to be deposited into my checking account but it never goes in. It just goes onto this stupid unsafe card. I have ordered a new card twice already so the numbers will be different but if my phone is hacked, what good is that doing. I’ll prob never see that money again. Thanks ReliaCard!

And to the girl whining about taking money out of an ATM, choose checking. Jesus there are only like 3 or 4 options right? You’d think just by process of elimination you’d have arrived at the solution.

It's so easy! All you do is follow the steps, snap a picture, and deposit.

  1. Select the Deposits button
  2. Choose the deposit account and enter the check amount
  3. Take photos of the front and back of the endorsed check
  4. Verify and Submit the deposit

For your protection, we require writing “Mobile Deposit Only” on the back of your check before you deposit it.

Personal Mobile Deposit Use: *Eligibility required: Subject to approval. $1, check limit per deposit. Maximum of $2, in total deposits per day.

Business Mobile Deposit Use: *Eligibility required: Subject to approval. $2, check limit per deposit. Maximum of $5, in total deposits per day.

Instant Balance

Access your account balances quickly! The new Mobile Banking Instant Balance feature allows you to access up to 6 of your eligible account balances from the login screen, no password necessary.

You must first opt-in to use Instant Balance; by default, you're opted-out until activation and set-up are completed. To opt-in and configure your Instant Balance settings, follow these steps:

  1. Activate the Saved ID feature on the login screen by entering your username and selecting the Saved ID button to the right. This will save your username and pre-fill the field each time you use the app. Once Saved ID is activated, the button label will then read “Change.” Note: If the Saved ID button on the login screen is toggled off at any time, Instant Balance will not function.
  2. Login to the RELIABANK Mobile Banking app.
  3. Click on the More tab in the bottom right corner.
  4. Toggle the Instant Balance feature to the "On" position.
  5. Once toggled on, the Instant Balance settings will display your list of available accounts viewable before login. You must choose the accounts you would like to see balances for when using this feature; up to 6 balances can be shown per user.
  6. Checkmarks should display next to the accounts you have selected; select the Save button and you'll see a confirmation screen.
  7. The next time you visit the app, you can tap the Instant Balance icon in the top-right corner of the login screen to view the desired balances without logging in.
  8. At any time, return to the Instant Balance settings from the More tab to reconfigure your settings, or disable the feature completely.


Is it secure? Yes, Instant Balance uses a read-only feature, the same pre-authenticated inquiry used for delivering balances via text message (SMS). It cannot be used to complete transactions and account numbers are always masked. Since no login occurs, no sensitive authentication or account information is transmitted during the interaction.

Common U.S. Bank ReliaCard App Problems and Troubleshooting Steps

✅ I'm getting black screen / white screen (blank screen) when I open U.S. Bank ReliaCard?

It is one of the most common problem in mobile phones and tablets. Usually when you open an app, you will see a black screen for few seconds and then app will crash with or without an error message. There are few ways to fix this problem.

  1. Most of the times, it might be a temporary loading issue. You just need to press the recent applications menu (usually the first left button) in your phone. Then you close the app that has this issue. Now open the app again. It may work normally.
  2. Try to restart your iPhone / iPad. Press the power off button for few seconds and then choose restart from the menu to restart your device.Now you can try opening the app, it may work fine.
  3. If none of the above working, you can wait till your phone battery drains and it turns off automatically. After that put it to charge, and press the power button. It may work after this.
  4. Finally, if you can't fix it with anything, you may need to uninstall the app and re-install it. iOS usually provides an option to restore settings and content from iCloud backup, if you've enabled it previously.
  5. Even in some rare cases, the re-install step also don't work. If that is your case, try installing older versions of the app. Good luck!

✅ My U.S. Bank ReliaCard app wont load or not working properly (loading error / server error / connection error / Screen Freeze / Ping Problem).

There are few situations that may cause the load issue in mobile apps.

  1. The U.S. Bank ReliaCard app server may be down and that is causing the loading issue. Please try after few minutes.
  2. Your wifi / mobile data connection not working properly. Please check your data connection.
  3. Too many users using the app at same time. Please try after few minutes.

  1. Please check your wifi / mobile data connection and verify that it is working properly. It may be down and stopping you from updating the U.S. Bank ReliaCard app.
  2. Confirm that you have enough storage space in your phone to download updates. If you don't have enough storage space, it can be blocking the app updates.

✅ Audio / video loading problem with U.S. Bank ReliaCard.

  1. Check your phone volume if you have audio problems.Try to use headphones to find out whether it is an issue with your speakers or with the app.
  2. If you've video loading problem, please check your internet speed and wifi connectivity.

✅ U.S. Bank ReliaCard app Notifications are not working properly.

  1. Go to your Settings->Notifications->U.S. Bank ReliaCard and check whether notifications enabled or not. If it is not enabled, please enable it.
  2. Also if you don't get notification alert sounds, re-verify that you don't accidentally muted the app notification sounds.

✅ I deposited money into U.S. Bank ReliaCard. But I don't see it added to my balance.

  1. It may take some time for the app company / developer to process the payment and credit to your account. Please be patient for hours and see if the amount gets credited to your account. If not, please contact the development company using the contact details given below.

  1. You can go to your account menu and then mostly you may see a withdraw option once you reach your withdrawal threshold. You can use that feature to initiate a withdrawal request.

✅ I withdrew money from U.S. Bank ReliaCard and I did not get in my account / paypal. How to verify?

  1. You can login to your paypal and see if there is any money credited. If you don't see the transaction, you can open the app and check the withdrawal status. If you see the withdrawal is successfully processed and don't get it in your bank/paypal, contact the app developers / support.
