In honor of Halloween, I'm in need for some good scarefest flicks! Be it blood and guts, mystery or just plain scary....tell me which movies made you afraid of the dark!
Poltergeist 2 (that old man still causes me to go into therapy relapse)
The Grudge
Paranormal Activity
The Exorcist (after seeing this, I had to walk home. In pitch black. Not a fun night)
The Others
The Mothman Prophecies (Crossing bridges and chapstick scare the bejeepers out of me)

The Ring really freaked me out. I was pregnant with Colwyn when I saw it and every time I would get up to go pee in the night, I would be sure she'd be waiting on the other side of my bedroom door.. then just inside the bathroom.. then in the shower.. then back out in the hallway, then on the other side of my bedroom door.. then in my bed.. you get the idea. Nighttime sucked for months after watching that.
I don't watch zombie movies anymore. While they don't freak me out while I'm watching them, they'll give me nightmares for weeks after I see one. Just not worth it.

:yeahthat:
If I had to pick one, I might choose Identity with John Cusack. But in general I try to avoid scary movies. Real life is scary enough, IMO.
But a movie that scared me in a different way was The Forgotten.
**POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOLLOW**
In the movie, people have forgotten that they ever had children. That whole concept is just terrifying to me. It's difficult to explain if you haven't seen the movie, but it kind of freaked me out.

The Shining.
I don't do scary movies but saw this with a group of friends on a ski trip together. Gives me the heebie jeebies thinking about it. Also Psycho. That's about my tolerance level for scary movies!

:yeahthat: the last one I saw was the spoof "Scary Movie". I closed my eyes at parts. Yes, the SPOOF was too scary. :bag
I vote Scream (I only saw the first one) or Poltergeist. I'm not sure I've actually seen The Exorcist all the way through!

I'm also a BIG wimp. For instance, I had nightmares about The Village, which really isn't that scary. For some reason it really creeped me out. The Others was scary in a good way too. I pretty much only watch stuff that creeps me out in a good way, if it is too scary than I am out of there (or refuse to be there in the first place).
I like old movies so here are a couple of my favorite "scary" movies: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051077/
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052357/
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046912/
ETA: The Mothman Prophesies was creepy and I have no idea why I watched it. Alone no less.

Silence of the Lambs
The Shining
Gives me the chills still to this day!

I love creepy movies, too. Not blood and gore, but suggestive scariness.
The sixth sense freaked me out. LOL. I was watching it alone at home back when I was single (ah the days :p)
I actually stopped the movie, grabbed my keys and went out for the rest of the evening.. lol
Not sure how I came back home :)

I have to give mad props to Melaine for picking Dial 'M' for Murder, as it's one of my favorite Hitchcock flicks, too.
I love what my dad would call "monster movies" best - Dracula (Bela Lugosi version from the 30s); Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein (with Boris Karloff and Elsa Lancaster); The Wolfman (with Lon Cheney, Jr and Claude Rains) and The Invisible Man (with Claude Rains)
Of course, I loved all 3 Scream movies as well because they didn't take themselves too seriously. Wes Craven is a dark and twisted genius. Honestly, I love Wes Craven movies, but often am turned off by the goriness that a lot of them seem to be associated with. His 2 best to date, IMO, are the original Nightmare on Elm Street and People Under the Stairs.
My two favorites of all time, however are The Uninvited (1944) [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0037415/] and the ORIGINAL House on Haunted Hill (1959) with Vincent Price [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051744/]
Yeah, I'm a freak. (BTW, ITA that The Village was super-creepy and I'll occasionally have nightmares about The Sixth Sense ... and it's not about the strung-out Donnie Wahlberg in tighty-whities part, either.)
FWIW, the 3 scariest I've ever seen are Nightmare on Elm Street, House on Haunted Hill and People Under the Stairs.

I saw Poltergeist when I was younger and I think it seriously scarred me for life on watching scary movies. I don't like them. I cannot watch The Excorcist. My husband forced me to watch The Ring and I had nightmares for weeks!! And I shut my eyes on the scary parts!!

The Descent (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0435625/) scared me out of my wits. I watched it with my sister who said that her husband had seen it and declared it not that scary. Yeah right, I was beyond terrified and unable to sleep afterwards.

the ORIGINAL House on Haunted Hill (1959) with Vincent Price
Skeletons are rude (http://senorgif.memebase.com/2010/10/25/funny-gifs-skeletons-are-rude/).
I think the Exocist is super-scary because it goes so far (the young girl shoving a crucifix into her ....) that all bets are off. You don't know what will happen next except you know it will be frightening and push boundaries.
And I posted in another thread about how Paranormal Activity made me afraid of the dark for a few days. Once in a while I still get a little freaked out about it. I do not plan to watch the sequel, though, don't want to see a baby in a horror movie at all.
Another vote for The Ring. Heh, my DH and I went to see that one at the theatre and he jumped so much during it, I was certain he was going to end up in the row behind us at some point.
All of that style of movies freak me out. The Grudge is another one.
And, agreeing with the above poster...any version of "When a Stranger Calls." The call is coming from inside the house!! GAH!

The Exorcist. I couldn't sleep for days just after watching a documentary about it. (Shudder) Way too real-seeming. I don't even think I've seen it all the way through, I just know I can't handle it.
I know to stay far, far away from The Ring. DH has a college buddy who is very laid back and into movies, and about The Ring, he said, "That movie f***ed me up for weeks." No thanks!

pretty much most Japanese horror films scare the $%^ out of me. they're so much scarier than the American versions. i saw the original versions of The Ring (Ringu), The Grudge (Juon) and OMG talk about SCARY. gotta admit though, the American version of The Ring was pretty darn freaky too.
oh and i saw the original (1970s) version of When A Stranger Calls when i was 11 yo..scared the crap out of me. i also saw Silence of the Lambs the year it was nominated for an Oscar (i was in middle school)...that gave me the creeps too.
ETA: The Ring was scary, but i'll admit i liked the thrill and DH & I watched The Ring 2 on our first date! I remember practically jumping out of my seat during some parts and DH kinda laughing at me. He just kinda sat there calmly... scary movies don't faze him AT ALL. Even the japanese versions didn't freak him out. i was kinda mad he doesn't get more scared, took out some of the fun :)

1408 - I love horror movies, but this one TERRIFIED me. Like sleep with a light on, terrified. SO scary.
Paranormal Activity - I recorded this on my PVR. As soon as I watched it, I had to delete it because I was too scared to have it in the house! LOL

Poltergeist 2 (that old man still causes me to go into therapy relapse)
OK, MIL's much older boyfriend looks like this guy. If I ever see him wearing a wide brimmed black hat, I am running.
Any scary movie. Seriously, I am the biggest wimp when it comes to scary movies.
:yeahthat:
I am a HUGE wimp. I can't even stand to watch the commercials.
When I saw "Amityville Horror," for about a month I woke up each night at the same time everyone was killed in the beginning of the movie. And I cried each time waiting to be killed.
Silence of the Lambs is still soooo creepy scary. But now I really like that movie!!
Poltergeist, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm St.... all of them have caused sleepless nights for me.

Prince of Darkness - slept with the light on for over a year after seeing it, even though I don't think it was that good of a movie.
The Others - very creepy, even after you "find out" the twist. Glad I was married when I saw that one!

When DH and I were dating, we watched The Turn of the Screw (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0209440/). He fell asleep on the floor while I was on the couch. The movie got so scary (to me) that I had tears running down my face. So I got on the floor next to DH so he could "protect" me! :ROTFLMAO:
I usually don't watch scary movies. But if I decide I want to watch one, I put the tv on mute and turn the closed captioning on. It's so much easier to watch without the creepy music!

I agree with Melissa that Children of the Corn is very scary. That red-headed kid's voice is really freaky.
There are so many others have already said but Stephen King's "It" was nighmare-inducing for me. Even though I watched that movie 15 years ago, the big clown with the razor sharp teeth is still stuck in my mind.

For your anniversary try another version of that story - The Innocents (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1099622-innocents/). I did not know Deborah Kerr movies from the early 1960s could be genuinely creepy but this one definitely is. The ending really shook me.

Tesis ("Thesis") it's a foreign film by a great director about a murder mystery involving snuff films. I had to watch it for a Film Class I took while studying abroad in college. My friend and I gripped each other's arms for most of the film, it's pretty intense (especially if you watch it in the dark).

The Strangers. Because, ya know, it could actually happen. And the thought of people sneaking around my house without me knowing, and then the random violence...it just totally freaks me out. I still think about that movie when I'm up at night by myself.
I don't watch scary movies but for some reason DH and I watched a movie that was awful. I don't know the name but this couple was on a trip somewhere (Venice?) and they met up with another couple that ended up drugging them and then slowly torturing the couple for their own sadistic pleasure.
I did watch the Sixth Sense and that one creeped me out. Thank goodness for Secondhand Lions or else I'd never care for that Osmet kid. Also, Lost Boys (which I realize was more campy than scary to most people).

Our anniversary is coming up in a couple of weeks, so I'll have to look for this one! I can't imagine Deborah Kerr being creepy.
I though of another scary film: Diabolique (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046911/). It's a B&W French film from the 50s, but I think it definitely holds up in the scary department. I rewatched it a few months ago, and those last scenes were so intense!

but, having said that, i have somehow seen a few scary movies... the one that came to mind when i saw the title of this post was "The Vanishing". YIKES! I don't know how DH talked me into watching that one.
The older movies, a la Hitchcock, Uninvited, Rebecca, are OK for me for the most part. i love old movies. But the power of suggestion used in those movies really adds to the scare factor!
Amityville Horror and Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween messed me up in high school. I can't even imagine how i'd be if i saw the Ring or some of the others mentioned in this thread...!

I don't find horror movies scary. I know, what is wrong with me? I have a hard time being fazed by the fantastical, things that I logically know can't happen.
I find anything depicting sexual violence or violence towards children very scary Nd often literally unwatchable.
American Me is one of the most scary things I have ever watched. It is a prison story and has a lot of disturbing content.
I self censor out a lot of content I just can't work with.

You mean the one with Corey Haim & Kiefer Sutherland?
That's another one of my favorites. But, I must admit, I didn't eat Chinese food for months afterward.
In the same vein, pardon the pun, are From Dusk 'Til Dawn, both Fright Night movies and The Fearless Vampire Killers (though this is Roman Polanski and I didn't know he was such a creep when I saw it) ... mostly campy, but with some great scares all the same.

I don't do gore, so I haven't seen many of the movies people list as their scariest. But for me, gore isn't scary, it's just gross and disturbing.
I know I'm a complete dork for saying it, but my scariest movie was Jurassic Park. I almost had to leave the theater during the T-rex scene. I think it was partly because I've always been scared of dinosaurs and partly because it was after the little kids. :bag

I have to agree with you on this one. I can handle most sci-fi/monster horror movies (I enjoy that kind, TBH, they're funny), but anything involving violent/scary situations that could really happen just totally freak me out. I won't watch them.
The only real exceptions were the Ring and then zombie movies.. which, like I said, don't bother me at all when I'm actually watching them, but I really don't like the vivid nightmares they give me.

It's really interesting to read everyone's opinions. To me, once I've read the book I don't find the movie very scary (The Shining, for instance). And I agree with a PP that sometimes the ridiculously fantastical, paranormal, "ghostly" movies don't scare me much because I don't believe it's real life at all (The Ring, for instance.)
However to contradict myself, I do believe that demon possession is possible and therefore The Exorcist freaked me out when I watched part of it in high school. I've never finished it, nor do I plan to, nor do I want to read the book!

Iran unveils squadrons of flying boats

Iran's Defense Ministry released photos of what it says are its new radar-evading flying boats, the Bavar 2.
Iran unveiled three squadrons of new flying boats on Tuesday, Iranian news agencies reported.
The craft, dubbed the Bavar 2, is armed with a machine gun and carries surveillance cameras, according to a report from the Iranian Student News Agency.
Video: Watch boats soar
"Islamic Republic of Iran is one of the few countries which managed to design, build and use flying boats in a short time," said Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Ahmad Vahidi, who oversaw the delivering of the aircraft at the Bandar Abbas naval facility on the Persian Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz.
The delivery comes as Iran celebrates its Week of Sacred Defense, which commemorates its eight-year-long resistance to the 1980 Iraqi invasion, according to the Fars News Agency.
The flying boats look like one Iran used during Persian Gulf war games in April 2006. Media reports from the time include a video of a flying boat taking off.
After those 2006 reports, bloggers poked fun at Iran’s so-called stealth technology, saying the flying boat looked like something anyone could buy in kit form from mechanical magazine ads.

After dark senorgif
I'm only going to speak in animated gifs in this thread. ;)
It isn’t uncommon for there to be a momentary standoff when a player is behind the opposing team’s net (especially on a power play) because if a single defenceman goes after him, he can come out in front of the net from the other direction for a scoring chance.
Attempts at trick shots like this are rare. They are indeed deprecated somewhat in terms of sportsmanship compared to a wraparound attempt or something.
It just stresses the importance of keeping your eye mainly on the puck and on the player’s body secondarily. The second someone starts pulling tricksy stuff like that they lose mobility and are sort of committed (unless they’re way faster than you but that’s an issue of agility training rather then in the moment decision making) you have to be on their ass immediately and just chop at*/lift their stick. I would say just steamroller the guy but those kids look kind of young to be hitting.
Even just yelling what the guy is doing so the goalie can shrink back into the net would have helped.
Again they look young and it’s hard to judge the skill level from a short and exceptional clip like that so who knows.
*not a slash but enough to knock a lifted puck off.
